At Middlebury, the residential experience plays a vital role in the development of students. Critical to the success of the residential program are the five Commons Residence Directors (CRDs). These full-time professional staff live in campus housing, interacting directly and intentionally with residents throughout the full calendar year to develop a safe, strong and vibrant learning community.
Reporting to the Commons Dean, CRDs utilizes a team approach to facilitate a positive and inclusive residential community. In collaboration with Commons team members and Student Life colleagues, CRDs identify and articulate student needs and issues within a developmental framework, and collaborates with the student staff to provide effective institutional responses.
CRDs are responsible for one of five areas of campus, housing approximately 485 – 650 students. Each CRD has primary responsibility for selecting, training and supervising 12-17 student residential life staff and coordinates student programming, intervention and on-call coverage. The CRD provides residential support, crisis response and on-call coverage during both the undergraduate academic year and for summer programs. Regular office hours, evening, and weekend hours are required and visibility to the campus community is essential.Responsibilities Essential Functions
Supervisor, supervisee, and Commons team duties
•Lead the recruitment and selection of ResLife staff
•Design, deliver and assess ResLife staff training each fall
•Supervise, develop, support and evaluate ResLife staff, holding them accountable to their job duties when necessary
•Conduct ongoing weekly supervisory meetings and periodic staff development sessions with ResLife staff on a group and/or individual basis
•Collaborate and consult with the Commons teams as needed and appropriate on ResLife staff related matters
•Participate in regular Commons team meetings and in the accomplishment of Commons team related tasks; Specifically included are regular 1:1 meetings with Deans and regular cross-Commons CRD team meetings
•Participate in academic year on-call rotation, providing crisis intervention and serving as a resource or referral agent, including over holidays and during break periods on a rotating basis.
•Participate in summer programs (Language School, Middlebury undergraduate student employees, etc.) on-call rotation to provide residential support, crisis and conduct response in collaboration with Language School administrators, JAO, Deans, and other colleagues as necessary
•Support Dean with case management needs of students, particularly acute needs, making referrals and offering assistance to Dean as needed
•Support and mentor ResLife staff in proactive community building work to prevent conduct issues from arising to the extent possible
•Respond to conduct issues in the Commons, resolving them where possible, and referring incidents to JAO as needed
•Respond to summer programs conduct issues as needed
•Teach students to assume responsibility for their actions as individuals and as members of the community through conduct response and informal interactions
•Consult with, and keeps Deans and Coordinators informed of conduct matters as necessary and appropriate
•Resolve conduct cases in a timely manner
•Maintain conduct records in Advocate
•Attend weekly incident review meetings
•Train, mentor and support ResLife staff in the design, delivery and assessment of a regular schedule of student-centered, developmentally appropriate programming
•Monitor and intervene with students who may be struggling academically or with other developmental issues
•Actively collaborate with the Commons team in the design, delivery and assessment of a student development focused residential curriculum
•Actively promote diversity awareness and inclusiveness through residential programming and dialogue
•In collaboration with the Commons team, advise and support the Commons Council, oversee programming and attend council and commons events
•Actively participate in harm reduction, risk management and wellness programs including Green Dot, QPR- suicide prevention, and alcohol education
•Participate in development and implementation of new student orientation programing
•Maintain a visible community presence through event attendance and regular presence in the residence and dining halls
•Utilize Restorative Practices (RP) to proactively build community and in response to concerns. Oversee ResLife staff utilization of RP as well
•Mentor students on issues affecting college students and make appropriate referrals to other offices as needed
•In coordination with the Commons Dean or Summer Program staff, respond as necessary to parents/legal guardians and other constituents regarding student issues, concerns, and questions.
•Oversee administrative procedures including fire safety checks, room check-in/out, dorm damage assessment/responsibility, and facilities requests, delegating to student staff where feasible and appropriate, in coordination with the Coordinator
•Assist with room draw
•Summer administrative duties as assigned, for example assisting with handbook updates and assisting with special projects
•Maintain regular weekly office hours
•Participate in campus committees and projects to the degree reasonable, as determined with the Dean.
•Facilitate room changes within the residential areas working closely with the Commons team and housing office
Ongoing professional development
•Knowledge of the challenges facing students from various underrepresented and marginalized populations (e.g., students with disabilities, students of color, queer, transgender, first-generation, low-income, international, immigrant, undocumented, tribal and indigenous communities)
•Ability to provide culturally competent and inclusive support services for students from various underrepresented communities
•Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion and social justice
•Commit to continuous improvement strategies and apply them to everyday work
•Actively participate in professional associations, conferences and other professional development opportunities as time and resources permit
•Seek opportunities for professional development on campus through collaboration with other departments and colleagues as time permits.
Other duties as assigned.Qualifications Education
Candidates are required to have a master’s degree plus at least two years of directly relatable residential life experience. Master’s degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel/Student Affairs, Counseling or a related field highly preferred.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Skills in assessing, organizing, and prioritizing multiple tasks for projects. Strong skills in written and verbal communication. Ability to lead, motivate and direct supervisees. Ability to communicate with students and families, and all levels of employees.Experience
Full-time experience in Student Affairs is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to cultural competency development, and fostering a collaborative multicultural environmentPhysical Demands
- Evenings, nights, weekends and some holidays required.
