Position Overview

Cover surfaces with drop cloths or masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting. Fill cracks, holes, or joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives. Apply primers or sealers to prepare new surfaces, such as bare wood or metal, for finish coats. Apply paint, stain, varnish, enamel, or other finishes. Mix and match colors of paint, stain, or varnish with oil or thinning and drying additives to obtain desired colors and consistencies. Read work orders or receive instructions from supervisors to determine work requirements.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions

Applies coats of paint, varnish, stains, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces, trimmings, and fixtures of buildings, and other structures. Smooths surfaces and removes old paint from surfaces, using whatever chemicals and tools necessary to prepare surfaces for painting. Fills nail holes, cracks, and joints with the type filler. Some drywall work as needed. Selects premixed paints to match existing colors. Paints surfaces using brushes, spray gun or paint rollers. Performs general clean up after each job, removing equipment, tools, and restoring area to organized manner it was in before painting. Performs duties and complies with needs of special events, before, during, and after the special events are completed. Observes, communicates, complies with and enforces Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) provisions; analyzes supplies and materials used in the performance, training and duties of subordinates of the trade. Available to help with or fully abate a facilities emergency. This may necessitate the use of a radio/cellular telephone. Further, a prearranged shift change may be implemented for predictable emergencies like inclement weather. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Experience Required

Requires general education or vocational training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Qualifications/Experience Preferred

Knowledgeable in sound human relations practices and establishing and maintaining effective working relations within the Physical Plant and UCO community, as well as outside vendors, in order to fulfill this job description. Willing to attend seminars to upgrade sillks and/or obtain required training to retain certification relative to trade.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Knowledgeable in the use of the tools and equipment used in painting and basic colors. Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions. Sufficient dexterity and coordination to operate equipment common to the trade, especially trucks and industrial tractors. Reads, understands manuals and instructions printed in English and documents legibly in same. Good oral and written communications are needed to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this position. Knowledge of use and disposal of chemicals common to the trade in a manner which protects oneself, others in the work area, and the environment. Ability to work safely and be protected in areas with fumes or airborne particles and toxic and/or caustic chemicals common to the trade. Ability to lead people, communicate clear, concise directions and coordinate work assignments of subordinates. Ability to work shifts other than the traditional Monday-Friday, 8:00a.m.-5:00p.m. hours; as well as other shifts and schedules for snow removal and/or other emergencies.

Physical Demands

Repetitive movement of hands and fingers. Typing and/or writing. Frequent standing, and/or sitting. Occasional walking, stooping, kneeling or crouching. Reach with hands and arms. Visually identify, observe and assess. Ability to communicate with supervisor/students/colleagues. Regular physical attendance required. This position requires a physical.  The physical requirements are:

• Ability to lift 50 lbs. regularly and 75 lbs. occasionally.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs. and carry 200 feet.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs. and carry up/down 30 stairs.
• Ability to walk regularly for long periods of time across the campus.
• Ability to sit for long periods of time.
• Ability to use and reach with hands and arms regularly.
• Ability to climb in high places using a ladder or balance frequently.
• Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend and crawl occasionally.
• Ability to push or pull dolly loaded with up to 120 pounds for 300 feet occasionally.
• Must have close, distance, and peripheral vision.
• Depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
