The University of Miami is home to over 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students from all 50 states and from 140 nations around the world. The Department of Housing and Residential Life is home to an extensive and diverse residential program featuring five residential colleges and University Village apartments that range in size from 400 – 850 students with over 4,200 students living on-campus. The Safety and Security program is charged with staffing all exterior access points to residential colleges between the hours of 10:00 PM and 8:00 AM, 365 days a year. This includes 11 posts that are staffed by 17-25 Security Assistants and supervised by four Security Supervisors each night. We strive to fulfill our vision – Student Housing for Student Success. The Manager of Residential Life Safety and Security works in conjunction with the Residential Life Night Managers and Assistant Director of Residential Life Safety and Security to lead the Safety and Security program. The focus of the Manager of Residential Life Safety and Security  pertains to safety-related educational programming, recruitment, and the supervision of the entry-level staff while ensuring efficient and effective job performance; this is achieved through the successful completion of all duties under the purview of this position.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

•    Manages and supervises the Department of Housing and Residential Life Safety and Security program comprised of approximately (95) student staff members: (75) Security Assistants, (1) Security Coordinator, and (14) Security Supervisors.

•    Directly supervises (14) Security Supervisors and along with the Residential Life Safety and Security Manager (Operations) co-supervises (75) Security Assistants. Works with and indirectly supervises (5) Office Assistants; and (1) Security Coordinator. Works collaboratively with other HRL colleagues.

•    Responsible for staff development, including recognition, performance evaluations, and discipline of student staff.

•    Ensures quality job performance standards are met by reviewing nightly documentation completed by student Security Supervisor staff.

•    Assists in coordinating fall and spring semester recruitment and selection of student Security Coordinator, Security Supervisor, Security Assistant, and Office Assistant staff for the Department of Housing and Residential Life Safety and Security program along with summer intersession and winter intersession recruitment and selection.

•    Participates in the recruitment processes for all levels of staff within the HRL Safety & Security team.

•    Assists in coordinating and facilitating training and educational sessions for HRL professional staff. 

•    Charged with implementing the commitment to excellence development model for student staff. Includes the four core values of: mastery of policy, professional conduct, customer satisfaction, and emergency management.

•    Charged with overseeing HRL Safety & Security programming and outreach initiatives.

•    Prepares and revises professional and student staff policies and procedures, manuals, and safety and security publications as needed and ensures updates are made to all manuals annually.

•    Responsible for possessing in-depth knowledge of University and Departmental systems. Trains staff on the usage of relevant systems.

•    Serves as an on-call Housing and Residential Life professional staff member for management of evening, overnight, and weekend emergencies and crisis response related to safety and security.

•    Available for significant night and weekend work pertinent to the position (hiring interviews, staff selections, team builder events, staff meetings, staff shadowing, etc.).

•    Assists with administrative room searches as requested by Administrator-On-Duty staff.

•    Acts as a Departmental liaison with other University departments such as UMPD concerning programmatic efforts with Housing and Residential Life safety and security.

•    Serves as “essential staff” during a hurricane or other campus wide emergency.

•    Coordinates staffing needs when the University is closed or operating on a limited schedule.

•    Participates on University-wide committees as requested and completes assessment projects as needed.

•    Completes other duties and special projects as assigned by the Assistant Director of Safety and Security.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
•    Principles of office management and supervision.
•    Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
•    Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
•    Advanced experience in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel – PowerPoint and Access a plus).
•    Skill in planning and coordinating clerical work.
•    Skill in interpreting and applying departmental policies and procedures.
•    Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships.
•    Strong technical skills.
•    Ability to manage and establish a budget.

Qualifications
•    Bachelor’s Degree is required. Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, or related field or working towards completion of such degree is preferred.
•    Minimum of one year work experience is required; work experience in an academic environment at the post-secondary level is preferred.
•    Experience with student staff supervision, emergency management, and crisis response is preferred.
•    Experience with educational programming, working with a diverse student population, conflict management and resolution, and simultaneously managing responsibilities in varied capacities is preferred.
•    Experience and familiarity with working overnight hours, access control systems (CBORD & Onity), scheduling software (WhenIWork) and housing system software (StarRez) is beneficial to the position and preferred, but can be taught on the job and is not required.
