The School of Health Sciences invites applications for a nine-month, fixed-term or tenure-track assistant or associate professor position beginning August 2019. Responsibilities include teaching on-campus and distance courses in the Emergency Medical Care Program with primary responsibility in the distance program; advising and mentoring students in collaboration with the Advising Center; providing service to the university, profession, and community; engaging in scholarly activities for the tenure track position; and providing vision and leadership for the students, faculty, and all stakeholders in the Emergency Medical Care Program. Applicants with a doctoral degree can be considered for a tenure-track faculty line.

Candidates with a history of, or strong potential for, effective undergraduate teaching, and a commitment to service within the university and broader regional community, will be considered. Salary and rank are commensurate with academic qualifications and experience. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

The Emergency Medical Care Program is a 128-credit hour degree with residential and online options for students, with concentration options in health management and science (pre-med). The Emergency Medical Care Program has a rich history of quality instruction in emergency medicine. The Program is one of approximately twenty institutions in the nation offering the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree for pre-hospital providers. The residential program is a CoAEMSP-accredited program and will have the next comprehensive review in 2020-21.

The School of Health Sciences offers undergraduate programs in Athletic Training, Emergency Medical Care, Environmental Health, Integrated Health Sciences, Nutrition & Dietetics, and Recreational Therapy. The Master of Health Sciences graduate program offers concentrations in Emergency Medical Care, Health Education, and Health Management. Additional programs within the College of Health and Human Sciences include Communication Sciences and Disorders, Nursing, Physical Therapy and Social Work. A collaborative environment conducive to interdisciplinary teaching, scholarship and service exists within the School and College of Health and Human Sciences.

Western Carolina University is a regional comprehensive university consisting of over 11,000 students with its main campus located in Cullowhee, NC. The Emergency Medical Care Program is housed in a 160,000 square foot, state-of-the-art Health and Human Sciences Building. The College of Health and Human Sciences’ faculty are committed to creating and implementing a program of inter-professional experiences for students enrolled in the health professions, and opportunities for inter-professional research and collaboration is extensive. In addition, the western North Carolina rural, aging and medically underserved location provides numerous and rich opportunities for research and grant acquisition.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Support the vision and mission of the Emergency Medical Care Program, along with the School, College, and University
• Develop and deliver online and residential courses within the Emergency Medical Care Program
• Mentor and advise students in collaboration with the Advising Center with regard to academic progress and professional development
• Engage in scholarly activities and creative contributions within the profession based upon the Boyer Model of scholarship for the tenure track position
• Provide service to the university, profession, and community
• Maintain currency in the academic discipline through continuing education, scholarship, and/or participation in activities within the profession, including involvement within professional organizations at the state, district and national levels
• Work cooperatively and collegially with all faculty and staff involved with the Emergency Medical Care Program and across the institution
• Carry out other assignments and duties as assigned by the Emergency Medical Care Program Director, Director of the School of Health Sciences and Dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree in emergency medicine or closely related degree from a regionally accredited institution
• Current certification in BLS, ACLS, PALS, and PHTLS
• Teaching experience in emergency medical care
• Clinical experience as an EMT or Paramedic
• Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills
• Eligible for North Carolina Office of EMS Instructor credential within one year of hire

Preferred Qualifications

• Earned doctorate in health sciences, adult education, or closely related degree from a regionally accredited institution required for a tenure-track position
• Three years teaching experience in emergency medical care
• Three years clinical experience as an EMT or Paramedic
• Evidence of scholarly activity and research agenda
• Evidence of student engagement in scholarship
• Demonstrated commitment to student engagement and success
• Evidence of service to the profession and/or community
• Experience with online curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation
• In addition to the doctoral degree, degrees in other health fields are favorable
