Job Description Summary

The Wake Forest University School of Law’s Professional Center Library is seeking a Law Reference Librarian with a strong service orientation and commitment to teaching. This person will serve as a faculty liaison to an active, research-oriented faculty, participate in collection development and teach research in the Law School’s first-year Legal Analysis, Writing and Research courses. Reference Librarians participate in all facets of the Law School’s intellectual and administrative activities. This is a full-time position and reports to the Associate Dean for Information Services.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to provide reference services, research assistance, and library instruction to all users of the library, provide instructional sessions to groups and classes, and contribute to the preparation and updating of library research guides, bibliographies, webpages and other outreach services. This person may teach an upper-level research course and may also train and supervise student assistants. Participation in professional activities is expected.

Required:

J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school, and MLS/MLIS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program or foreign equivalents of either or both. Knowledge of print and electronic information resources; strong commitment to public service and user satisfaction; excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred:

Prior academic law library work experience and prior teaching experience preferred, but not required. Knowledge of or ability to learn emerging technologies, especially electronic information access.  Creativity and adaptability in handling multiple, simultaneous demands.

Position Summary:  The Wake Forest Professional Center Library is seeking a Law Reference Librarian with a strong service orientation and commitment to teaching. This person will serve as a faculty liaison to an active, research-oriented faculty, participate in collection development and teach research in the Law School’s first-year Legal Analysis, Writing and Research courses. Reference Librarians participate in all facets of the Law School’s intellectual and administrative activities. Provides reference services, research assistance, and library instruction to all users of the library. This is a full-time position and reports to the Associate Dean for Information Services and Technology.

Essential Functions:

·         Provides reference and research assistance using traditional or electronic resources.  Shares reference responsibility with three other librarians. Contributes to development of new services to meet user needs. May have responsibility for one or more subject areas, including making collection development recommendations for these areas.

·         Serves as a faculty liaison to law faculty members.  Works with faculty to learn research areas and develop faculty interest profiles. Determines if faculty have special collection development or research assistance needs. Aids faculty in more effectively utilizing research assistants. Apprises faculty of new and existing library resources and services.  Depending upon faculty interest may create specialized research guides, class materials, or develop and deliver specialized research lectures for faculty’s classes.

·         Teaches research in mandatory Legal Analysis, Writing, and Research Program for first year law students, including training in research methods using a variety of formats. Prepares and grades legal research exercises. May teach an upper-level legal research seminar on specialized legal topic.

·         May assist in the hiring, training and supervision of student reference assistants.

·         Participates as a member of the collection development team, evaluating and recommending legal resources in all formats and subject areas.

·         Participates in library outreach and marketing and in the assessment of these and other library initiatives. Participates in departmental, library, and law school committees. Demonstrates commitment to continual professional development and participates in regional and national professional associations.

·         Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education/Experience: J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school, and MLS/MLIS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program or foreign equivalents of either or both. Prior academic law library work experience and prior teaching experience preferred, but not required. Expertise in selected subject areas (empirical, international) a plus.

Knowledge Skills Abilities:

·         Demonstrated knowledge of legal research and reference materials, in traditional and electronic formats. Proficiency in the use of electronic databases and web-based information delivery.

·         Demonstrated ability to provide reference and research assistance in legal and related subjects.

·         Strong commitment to public service and user satisfaction.

·         Demonstrated skill in instruction, both with groups and one-on-one.

·         Experience with automated library systems, standard Office software, and different internet applications.

·         Flexibility in changing technological environment. Interested in and able to learn emerging technologies, especially electronic information access.

·         Initiative, enthusiasm, and commitment to supporting the academic and research needs of law school faculty and students.

·         Excellent communication skills, both oral and written; strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively in a team and independently, and to work collaboratively with faculty and staff.

Physical Requirements: Light work: Climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, repetitive motions.  Close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and viewing a computer terminal. Subject to inside environmental conditions.
