Windows Infrastructure - Cloud Systems Administrator II

JOB PURPOSE:

Enterprise Technologies is one of Stanford's central IT organizations, providing computing and communication infrastructure and support for the teaching, learning and business activities of the University.

The Cloud Systems Administrator II is a member of the Windows, Cloud, Data Infrastructure team in Enterprise Technologies. The team is primarily responsible for the operation, configuration, and security of Stanford's Microsoft systems: Active Directory, Azure AD, Office 365, Intune, Managed Print services, and the centralized Windows Server OS and RDP infrastructure both on premise and in the cloud (AWS, GCP, Azure). The team is also responsible for the school's primary Google Suite, Box, AirWatch, and Proofpoint cloud SaaS applications. This is a key position within University IT, and is expected to provide technical expertise in a highly distributed technical environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Cloud Systems Administrator II works closely as part of the team to develop, plan, support and secure Stanford's infrastructure. She or he will provide technical assistance with Stanford's hybrid cloud systems, and be expected to solve operational problems with Stanford's Active Directory, Windows OS application servers, Office 365, Federated Services, Managed Print services, and other cloud infrastructure components. She or he will also assist in the administration of cloud services, Active Directory, and Windows server environments. Additional responsibilities include:

CORE DUTIES*:

  • Design, develop, install, and maintain operating systems, utilities, and applications software on computing systems.
  • Resolve system emergencies with significant impact on the integrity of user data and systems.
  • Design, configure, implement, and maintain system security strategies, policies, and procedures.
  • Establish software/hardware standards and systems policies and procedures.
  • Engage in long-term strategic planning with regard to systems development and integration.
  • Conceptualize and implement systems within broad technical or structural frameworks.
  • Perform capacity planning for system configuration, software services, network services, load distribution, and service interrelationships among computer systems.
  • Act as a technical expert or lead for local computer system administration.
  • Build, install, configure, analyze, tune, and troubleshoot Windows operating systems both on premise and in cloud IaaS providers.
  • Resolve difficult system problems and provide user consultation or training.
  • Configure systems based on approved designs of system and network security.
  • Manage hardware, software, and utilities for installation, modification, troubleshooting, maintenance, and upgrades of operating systems and workstation environments.
  • Monitor and analyze resource usage to recommend/develop enhancements to system capabilities and performance.
  • Document systems infrastructure for users, support and consulting personnel, and developers.
  • Train personnel who provide support and consulting services to users.
  • Support on prem and cloud servers, including security configurations, patching, and troubleshooting.
  • Configure, implement, and maintain system security strategies, policies, and procedures.
  • Support infrastructure deployment models, including Private, Public, and Hybrid.
  • Maintaining a general level of expertise in Active Directory, Azure, Windows based technologies, and AWS.
  • Participating in 24x7 on-call support rotation.
  • Document and follow processes and procedures for the Windows infrastructure and systems.
  • Collaborating with the team on future direction and opportunities for new technology.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Education & Experience:

    Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience with complex multi-system platforms and vendors.
  • Experience coordinating multi-system and computing environments in independent computing facilities.
  • Experience developing/implementing a business continuation and disaster recovery plan.
  • Proven ability to develop appropriate plans to meet computing needs.
  • Expert ability to program in multiple programming languages in multiple operating systems.
  • Proven ability to lead and work on large/complex system deployment projects in a team environment.
  • Experience with managing an integrated computing environment.
  • Experience with networked environments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of security protocols.
  • Ability to manage shared resources and perform moderately complex tasks.
  • Ability to work well independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to train to others in applications and operating system fundamentals.
  • Knowledge of various Cloud service models, including IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS.
  • Experience implementing a business continuation and disaster recovery plan.
  • Extensive hands-on experience supporting Windows systems in 24 x 7 enterprise environments.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work calmly and effectively in pressure situations and manage time effectively in a changing environment, strong conceptual and logical abilities and strong planning and project abilities.
  • Ability to creatively apply a unique combination of skills & knowledge to the support and maintenance of the Stanford systems environment
  • Must be able to work as an independent, productive, responsible, self-motivated member of operational and project teams, often simultaneously.
  • Understanding and experience with information security in a distributed computing environment.



    ADDITIONAL REQUIRED SKILLS:
  • Demonstrated experience supporting a Windows Infrastructure, with strong expertise in Active Directory, Windows OSes, and email.
  • Demonstrated experience managing Windows-based systems and services at scale.
  • Ability to automate common system administration and management tasks through Windows PowerShell.
