Nature of Work

The Director of Recreation and Wellness works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students in planning, developing, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive, balanced student activities program which addresses the needs of the College community and enhances the quality of living and learning for students. Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Student Life, the Director of Recreation and Wellness is responsible for all recreation and wellness programming. In addition, the position will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of all outdoor/indoor recreation and fitness facilities, ensuring that the operation functions to meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff. The position requires the ability to work various times including early mornings, evenings, nights, and weekends, and the individual must be especially sensitive to issues involving the safety and security of all participants in offered programs. The Director serves on various college committees, attends related University System of Georgia meetings, and frequently works evenings and weekends.

Essential Duties

Program Management

  • Provide leadership and direction to ensure that recreation and wellness programs engage participants, promote health and wellness, and provide a diverse opportunities for learning.
  • Ensures that the planning, organization, implementation, and evaluation of programs are conducted in accordance with established service and safety standards.
  • Manages the Fitness Center, functional fitness center (BRIG), informal recreation program facilities, outdoor adventure programs, and low ropes course.
  • Coordinates wellness programming in collaboration with the Health Center and the Office of Counseling and Disability Services.
  • Manages the College’s summer camp program in collaboration with the Office of Residence Life and Housing and other academic and department co-sponsors, including supervision of student assistants, creation of summer registration/payment, and publicity.
  • Responsible for the effective leadership and implementation of volunteer services in collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Student Life and the Director of Service-Learning.
  • Manage the logistics of department and program implementation, including physical facilities arrangements.
  • Report, track, and follow up on facilities issues. Develop and implement a plan for facilities improvements to enhance the student experience.
  • Oversee, review, and expand the College’s intramural and club sports program.
  • Assists club sports in developing their student activity fee budgets, budget use, and accurately completing budget paperwork for the College.
  • Assists faculty sponsors of club sports in the development of organizational charters, by-laws, and constitutions and the implementation of activities, programs, and events.
  • Develop an inclusive, safe, and diverse environment for student, faculty, staff, and guests. Address issues appropriately as they arise.
  • Develop and implement recreation and wellness policies and procedures based on the department, College, and University System of Georgia guidelines along with best practices. Ensure that policies and procedures are developed, reviewed, communicated, and implemented consistently across all programs and services.
  • Produce and implement a comprehensive marketing strategy to promote and increase use of the recreation and wellness facilities.
  • Manage registration and documentation, including forms, waivers, reports, registrations, and equipment checkout.
  • Collect and analyze data to create reports and determine trends and needs. Develop solutions and recommendations.
  • Frequently work evening and weekend hours as a function of the position.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Personnel Management

  • Hire, train, and supervise student staff and fitness class instructors for the recreation and wellness department.
  • Develop and evaluate staff to encourage retention and growth.
  • Develop comprehensive training programs for staff.
  • Ensures that staff are provided regular safety training.

Financial and Administrative Management

  • Strategically review and analyze the recreation and wellness budget to ensure that the operations are managed effectively.
  • Develops, in collaboration with students, faculty, and staff, the budget and expenses for this department.
Minimum Qualifications and Training
  • Master’s degree plus two years of experience in higher education required (either at the graduate assistant or professional level).
  • A firm understanding of recreation and wellness programming, including risk management issues and applicable state and national standards.
  • Ability to provide leadership for student organizations and a diverse student population.
  • Ability to assess the programming and activity needs of the student body and develop a suitable variety of student programs and activities.
  • Strong interpersonal communications and organization skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple budgets with attention to detail.
  • Ability to compose, design and produce ads, brochures, publicity literature, and event programs using desktop publishing and word-processing.
  • Ability to effectively supervise students and contracted service providers.
  • A commitment to providing services in accordance with the stated mission, goals, objectives, and priorities of the College.
