Description:

A Maintenance Mechanic Level 1 in the (HVAC Shop) is responsible for ensuring the maintenance and safe compliance of all assigned Hamilton College Buildings and Infrastructure. This position provides general maintenance as well as a variety on new installations on campus. Expectations include: developing best practices, monitoring performance and maintaining the highest achievable building and infrastructure standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Works as directed by the Maintenance Mechanic Foreman and/or Manager, Technical Trades.
  • Work generally on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, control systems, equipment and mechanical devices and systems. Maintains or repairs plant heating boilers, pumps, tanks and equipment.
  • Inspects and services cooling towers, condensers, compressors, pumps, motors, fans and other parts of major air conditioning systems. Will be required to report major malfunctions to manager.
  • Test condition of water being fed into boilers, once daily or as directed. Maintains records of temperatures and service problems encountered.
  • Cleans rust, scale and carbon accumulations from boiler tubes, as required and directed. Typically twice a year.
  • Works with or coordinates work performed by various service contractors on air conditioning, water treatment, boiler treatment, etc.
  • Responds to emergency calls at all hours to correct minor problems in mechanical and or electrical systems.
  • Assists other trades when work load requires.
  • Performs minor renovation work including rough-in to finish
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, training, seminars, etc for the purpose of advancing knowledge, skills and ability.
  • Responds to emergency calls at all hours to correct problems in mechanical systems.
  • Keeps appearance of equipment and building work areas in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Maintains all food service equipment and appliances belonging to the College.
  • Position is expected to work a reasonable amount of overtime as required by college.
  • Perform other duties at the discretion of management.

Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma plus ten (10) years of mechanical experience and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in HVAC maintenance environment. Technical degree and/or professional certifications in a relevant field required. Knowledge of all types of HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical work, and institutional maintenance.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Experience with Windows-based personal computer system is a plus.
