Position:  PROFESSOR OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES – MERCED CAMPUS, 2 Vacancies

(Successful candidates may be assigned to other locations)  

Salary:     $55,018 – $75,137 (additional compensation for doctorate)

The two vacancies are for full-time, tenure track instructional assignments at Merced College under the general direction of the Dean of Science, Math, and Engineering. The professors will teach a variety of courses. The specific mix of teaching assignments will vary from semester to semester. The standard teaching load is 15 units per semester, which may include evening and weekend hours.

Merced College is a midsized community college located in California’s Central Valley. Founded in 1962, the college serves more than 16,000 students with room to expand on its 267 acre main campus and 120 acre Los Banos site. Merced, incorporated in 1889, offers historical sites, affordable housing, access to the Bay Area and Sacramento, and is the Gateway to Yosemite National Park and the Sierra mountains as well as home to the University of California Merced campus. The Science, Math, and Engineering Area offers a wide variety of courses, including Biology. This position has the opportunity to provide innovative and extensive outreach in the local community, and with our educational partners, to aid in the promotion of the sciences throughout the region and within the Merced Community College District. Area faculty are committed to helping students attain their educational goals, be it to transfer to a four-year school, obtain an associate’s degree, or to complete pre-requisites for another program.

Science, Math, & Engineering Area: Offers a full range of classes from the pre-associate degree to the transfer level.  Area disciplines include Biology, Biotechnology, Physics, Math, and Chemistry, among others. Area courses offer students a solid foundation for exploring these and other areas of study.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Master’s degree in any biological science
    OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in any biological science AND master’s degree in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science

OR

 

  • The equivalent
  • Must have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Preferred:

  • Experience teaching Human Physiology, Anatomy, and/or Microbiology
  • Current technology skills related to teaching in the discipline and a willingness to pursue future technological developments. 

Essential Functions:

  • Provide instruction in accordance with established course outlines and expectations
  • Inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance policy
  • Maintain required student attendance and scholastic records
  • Prepare and grade class assignments and examinations
  • Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy
  • Participate in the development and review of curriculum
  • Participate in the development of teaching—learning methods and materials
  • Participate in departmental, area, and campus professional activities/committees
  • Participate in the college's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments
  • Perform tasks needed for student records, e.g. submit grades on time to admissions and records

Interview Information: Those applicants deemed most qualified for the position will be invited to appear for oral interviews before a screening committee which includes a 15-minute teaching demonstration on a selected topic.   Finalist interviews with district administrators will follow the same or next day.  A limited number of candidates will be invited to interviews.
