Basic Function

As an integral part of the Office of Assessment, and crucial to the College’s SACSCOC accreditation process, Student Learning Outcomes Coordinator will direct faculty and staff regarding how best to maintain and
continuously improve student learning.

Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent will understand accountability movement in higher
education and apply such contexts to NOVA; this includes in-depth comprehension of accrediting and funding agencies’ complex requirements related to SLOs. This individual will oversee maintaining files and databases
documenting assessment activities (including institution-level assessment of
general education goals), related implementation activities, and progress
towards achieving program and College goals, including accreditation. Direct faculty and staff regarding how best to maintain and continuously improve student learning. This involves a wide range of activities, including (1) constructing and/or refining student learning outcomes (SLOs) for particular programs; (2) selecting and
creating appropriate methods of assessing student achievement of those SLOs;
(3) utilizing assessment results to improve student learning; and (4) reporting on
the process including with VCCS, SCHEV and SACSCOC. This position requires
working with provosts, academic deans and college leadership to champion SLOs at NOVA. Analyze data and document results in support of improved SLOs. Active in submission of OIR and College documents and reports and will assume other work
responsibilities to the position as needed or as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and applicable experience and/or training. Experience working in higher education and knowledge of higher education practices and policies. Experience working in with a diverse population. Extensive computer skills and knowledge of MS Office products (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and applicable experience and/or training. Experience with accreditation reporting; Experience maintaining files &
databases; Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methodologies
within higher education. Experience in a community college setting.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to coordinate data collection, implement reporting procedures, and determine effectiveness and efficiency of such procedures. Skill in analyzing data and applying results to SLO efforts. Ability to translate complex issues to faculty. Can organize and track multiple projects. Is familiar with qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. Promotes effective teamwork. Possesses excellent communication (written and oral) skills. Has an awareness of challenges in fostering an institution-wide culture and commitment to assessment and an appreciation for the traditions and student-centered mission of community colleges.
