Director of Graduate Career Development Center
The Director provides strategic, data-informed leadership of the AGSM's career center, collaboratively partnering with the campuses' career and advising professionals, as well as faculty and external stakeholders to provide students with the guidance, resources, and opportunities needed to launch their professional lives. As the expert on career development, labor trends, and related career services, the Director will communicate post- collegiate outcomes, share best practices, promote cross-departmental and divisional data sharing, advance the use of technology, and foster creative strategies and solutions that address evolving needs and expectations of both student and employers.
In addition to overseeing the management of the AGSM Career Development Center, the Director has a high degree of autonomy in developing programs, identifying necessary resources, and setting short/long-term strategies, which have an impact on the ranking of AGSM. This includes devising intentional strategies that engage and support career readiness among diverse student populations including underrepresented, under-resourced, international, non-traditional, and veteran students. Creating formal relationships with national and regional corporations to provide AGSM with partnership opportunities is a key responsibility.
The Director is responsible for ensuring that all staff of the CDC establish strong relationships with international, national, regional, and local Graduate professional organizations, such as, the MBA Career Services & Employer Alliance (MBACSEA), the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA), Prospanica, NAAMBA, MPACE, and NACE. In consultation with other AGSM administrators, the Director manages relationships between the school, UCR, and external constituencies, such as, alumni and corporations with primary attention given to developing internship and postgraduate employment opportunities that are developed based on comprehensive programming.
The Director will continuously cultivate and manage a broad spectrum of internal and external working relationships including with faculty; academic and student life administrators; admissions and enrollment management, advancement, alumni relations, and institutional research colleagues; alumni; governmental leaders; and employers. The Director will supervise two (2) administrative staff, two (2) graduate students, and is responsible for administering the office's annuak budget.
Ensures smooth working relationships with other organization departments, external schools, districts, corporations, and other organizations related to career programs. (20%)
- Understanding of graduate business program marketplaces, corporate environments, and school Demonstrated knowledge of a wide variety of local, national and international, occupations, job search methodologies, and current employment trends. Develop a public relations/outreach strategy to increase the visibility of AGSM students and alumni to employers. Attract traditional and nontraditional organizations to recruit AGSM students.
Ensures that professional and support Career Services Specialists are providing the full range of career services pertaining to the specific career program. (15%)
- Demonstrated high level of strategic planning and analytical skills with the ability to establish and articulate goals, strategies, tactics, and benchmarks. Ability to actively engage staff in this process and to elicit their support for goals, strategic, etc.
Develop and maintain relationships with local, regional, and national alumni/employers to identify and generate employment opportunities, internships, job shadowing and other professional development opportunities. Directly work with students on strategic and tactical levels to develop career plans and to set realistic professional goals, utilizing "best-practices" available Provide resume feedback, career assessment and counseling, job search strategy coaching, interview preparation, mock interviews, and salary negotiation advice. (15%)
Provides assistance, guidance, and direction on complex and particularly sensitive issues and situations. (10%)
- Analyze and interpret data on internship and full-time employment results. Assess and analyze employer business and personnel needs, and how the strengths, weaknesses, and skill sets of our graduate student populations match the current job market needs; provide feedback and recommendations to AGSM leadership, staff, and faculty.
Provides feedback to management on gaps of service to clients, and recommends changes/enhancements to the program. (10%)
- Collaborate with faculty to assure that internships and experiential education create positive professional development experiences for students and further engage AGSM in a broader context of visibility in private, public, and non-profit sectors.
Recommends disciplinary action, hiring, and separation of employees when appropriate. (5%)
- Monitors employee performance and provides direction and assistance. Counsels and evaluates employee performance. Provides relevant training to staff.
Coaches students and alumni on all areas of career development and career management including, but not limited to, resume writing, interviewing skills, job/internship search techniques and networking. Plans, implements, and conducts outreach workshops, presentations, and programs aimed to educate and inform students, faculty, and staff about career programs and services. (5%)
Manages departmental budget including allocation of resources and review of spending. Perform other duties as assigned. (5%)
In collaboration with others develop and maintains current information and related databases for career advising and employment statistics, including salary information. Develop and expand the use of data collection strategies such as surveys, questionnaires, observations, and interviews File annual reports with ranking organizations, such as US News. Oversee the tracking, analyzing, and reporting of internships and statistics on current students; provide reports on a quarterly basis, or as requested, by the Dean, Associate Dean or HR Director. (5%)
Organizes school-wide career fair events for employers and students/alumni. Along with design and coordinate career seminars, academic summer camps and online educational workshops and programs. (5%)
Oversee the CDC Advisory Board with 12-18 corporate members and 6 internal staff and faculty; hold quarterly meetings; work collaboratively with students and student organizations on events, activities, and programs. Provide support and expertise as appropriate. Stay engaged with the CDC Student Advisory Council to assist with marketing events to students and assisting at events. Conduct the Career Development Center orientation, a segment of the new student orientation to promote alignment of educational experiences and career management strategies. Manage the MBA Fellows Program to assist 2-4 students yearly to do fellowship internships in non-profit organizations in the I.E. (5%)
Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
6 - 10 years of related experience.
Advanced knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling
processes, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.
Ability to design and modify computer applications and to meet program needs, problem identification, presentation skills, verbal communication, written communication, and organizational skills.
Extensive knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice; workshop and program design.
Ability to work with people from diverse cultures.
Ability to work effectively with persons from culturally diverse backgrounds and to foster inclusive excellence in all facets of one's work.
Strong organizational skills, including strategic planning and change management facility; ability to create a vision and gain buy in from key stakeholders.
Demonstrated leadership and decision-making capability; excellent ability to build collaborative and cooperative partnerships across many, varied constituents and stakeholders including students, faculty, staff, employers, alumni, and donors.
A clear passion for enhancing the student experience and advancing student learning; superior written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated knowledge and facility in applying current and emerging technology to enhance career center operations and services.
Demonstrated understanding of current issues, best practices, and emerging trends in higher education career services, outcomes assessment, employment trends, and job markets.
Demonstrated ability to supervise and carry out comprehensive management responsibilities in a complex, fast-paced, results oriented, working environment, including program development performance management and policy management/development.
Exceptional interpersonal, writing, and oral communication skills, including presentation skills to communicate effectively with diverse audiences and enhance delivery of career development services to students and alumni.
An advanced degree (Masters or higher) in student affairs, higher education administration,counseling, business, public administration or related discipline.
Minimum of 10 years of progressive professional experience in career services, student affairs, corporate recruitment, business, or development.
Minimum of 5 years of professional budget management experience, including oversight of allocated budget resources and review of spending.
Knowledge of UC programs, career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations, recruiting and staffing methods, employment trends.
Previous supervisory/managerial experience.
