Overview

Reporting to the Director of Princeton Institute for the Science & Technology of Materials (PRISM), the Executive Director spearheads the development of PRISM's vision and strategic direction during an era of anticipated growth and development. As the only entity at Princeton dedicated to materials research and as the campus leader in industry affiliates, PRISM catalyzes synergy and collaborations to drive innovation in research and technology. Through strategic leadership and by initiating and leading special projects, the Executive Director leverages faculty and industry expertise to build community and cultivate new materials research efforts. The Executive Director works alongside the Director as a thought partner, creative problem solver, and trusted adviser to achieve PRISM's goals. This position has a secondary reporting relationship to the Office of the Dean of the Faculty.

Leading the administrative as well as the strategic aspects of the institute, the Executive Director creates and owns processes to drive greater coordination, interactions, and communication. The Executive Director oversees the PRISM finance team to manage monthly and annual budget cycles; supervises the administration of research activities, academic program activities, and core facilities; and steers the PRISM narrative, overseeing content development for internal and external stakeholders. The Executive Director defines and measures success through metrics tracking and reporting.

Strategic Leadership and Implementation: Foremost, the Executive Director supports the Director to advance the institute's mission by planning, developing, implementing, and leading strategic efforts. Central to these efforts is the fostering of interactions and cultivation of relationships among stakeholders in academia and industry to bring about high impact materials science and engineering innovations.

Faculty and industry engagement: The Executive Director develops avenues and opportunities to engage faculty, and their students, with the purpose of cultivating a strong sense of community and fostering research synergies. The Executive Director helps coordinate recruitment and appointment of researchers and visiting collaborators, and assists with the coordination of proposal writing for faculty research. More than one hundred companies are engaged with PRISM and the Executive Director develops a road map for deepening engagement among existing companies and forging partnerships with new companies. This individual helps develop and coordinate faculty-industry research collaborations ensuring companies move through an engagement pipeline.

Administration management and staff supervision: The Executive Director oversees the Institute's administration of activities and operating budget, coordination of FTE and AI budget, and compliance and oversight of research and financial issues. The Executive Director supervises the administration of research activities, academic program activities, and core facilities. This individual supervises the hiring, performance reviews, and merit increase process for the administrative staff. The Executive Director is responsible for the improvement of current processes and coordinates organizational procedures for increased efficiency and productivity.

Communications: The Executive Director will help define the PRISM identity and narrative and develop a communications plan to increase the visibility of PRISM on Princeton's campus, in industry, and in the wider world. The Associate Director will oversee communications for PRISM, including website, social media, print, and internal and external newsletters. The Associate Director will represent PRISM at various meetings on campus and off.

Metrics and budget management: In addition to setting and overseeing the administrative budget for PRISM, the Associate Director will develop financial and non-financial metrics to help the Director identify PRISM challenges and strengths. These metrics will include financial analysis, forecasting and P&Ls.

Qualifications

Qualifications

Masters in material science or related field; adept at communicating understanding of material science. Demonstrated ability to provide vision, strategic leadership and implementation for organization building. Ability to initiate and cultivate relationships with all levels of administrators, researchers and industry professionals. Excellent organizational, oral, and writing skills. Ability to anticipate and initiate appropriate action in support of the Director. Discretion and good judgment; must handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately. Strong analytical abilities and experience in budget management. More than five years management and supervisory experience. High level of competency with desktop computing tools such as Word, Excel, and Power Point.

Additional Qualifications

PhD preferred in material science or related field

Industry experience welcome.
