The postdoctoral scholar is responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of impactful research and engagement projects in the discipline of marine science, geography, environmental science, or a related field. Responsibilities include assisting with data analysis of existing research projects, generating original ideas for new, interdisciplinary research, working with large, multi-layered data sets and programs (e.g. GIS), and contributing to the growth of two interdisciplinary units at ECU:
1.The Integrated Coastal Studies Program, which focuses on issues related to the continental margin resources, natural hazards, and coastal and marine health.
2.The Natural Resources and the Environment Cluster, which focuses on issues related to water quality and quantity (including surface/ ground, waste- and storm-water management) and biogas and off-shore energy.

Job Duties

Specific duties include: developing and contributing to ongoing research agendas at ECU, particularly those related to the entities listed above, assisting with intramural and extramural white papers, proposals and progress reports, and coordinating and convening meetings with research cluster members. Scholars will also interact with the Vice Chancellor, Associate and Assistant Vice Chancellors, and Directors in the Division of Research, Economic Development and Engagement. Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including expenditures, biosafety, and responsible conduct of research and human subjects training.

Approximately 50% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to the Integrated Coastal Programs, with an emphasis on coastal and marine research.

Approximately 50% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to the Natural Resources and the Environment cluster, with an emphasis on water quality and quantity.

Minimum Education/Experience

English Proficiency
Excellent written and oral communication and organizational skills
A PhD in marine science, geography, environmental science, or a related field.
Expertise with GIS

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Research experience in the social, natural, or multidisciplinary sciences, with familiarity with theories and methods that address contemporary social and environmental problems affecting coastal and marine environments and water resources. A track record of applying for and securing external funding. Experience working in multidisciplinary research environments and with programming languages (python, C++, Java, etc.) a plus.
