Western Carolina University is looking for a creative, energetic, innovative visual storyteller to lead its small but mighty photo and video production team within the University Marketing department. The ideal candidate will have a solid portfolio in both video and photography, demonstrated experience successfully managing teams and large-scale projects, and the ability to define and articulate a vision for how photography and video can play a role in strengthening the reputation of the university.

The photo and video team supports all aspects of university communications and marketing, so versatility and flexibility are a must. The candidate should be equally comfortable working with an art director to plan and shoot still photography for a print piece, partnering with the social media team to capture quick-turn authentic video for use in cross-platform content marketing efforts, and collaborating with the Communications and Public Relations team in creating visual content for external media (print, broadcast and digital), the WCU magazine, and other university news and communications purposes.

To that end, a general understanding of print production techniques as well as a working knowledge of mainstream social media platforms and how visuals are used on each is necessary.

The Photo and Video Production Director supervises three full-time producers and reports to the Chief Marketing Officer.

Additional professional qualities we are looking for include:

•Demonstrated ability to drive collaboration both as a team leader and team member.
•Excellent interpersonal skills, cultural responsiveness and ability to work effectively in a diverse, multi-layered organization.
•A thirst for understanding what’s new and next in the world of visual communications, and a willingness to innovate even when it involves uncertainty.
•The ability to be decisive under pressure but also thoughtful and strategic, recognizing how department decisions might affect others across the university.
•A passion for project planning and project management, including a demonstrated ability to manage project teams that include diverse skill sets.
•Strong oral and written communication skills.
•Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and balance project requests that come in varied volume and from a wide variety of constituents.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position

•Associates degree in appropriate field and 5 years of experience or bachelor’s degree and 3 years of experience working in photography and/or videography.
•One year supervisory experience. Significant experience managing large-scale projects with diverse teams may be considered as a substitute to supervisory experience.
•Demonstrated experience successfully planning and managing projects from concept to completion, including leading teams with diverse skill sets.
•Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite with advanced working knowledge of Photoshop and Premiere Pro.
•Strong visual portfolio, preferably including examples of published photography and videography.
•Demonstrated experience producing visual media for news stories, print publications, web and social media.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalency and two years of visual/graphic arts experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

•Experience working in higher education or within similarly complex organizations.
•Basic familiarity with graphic design principles as it applies to animation necessary in video production and layering text with photography for use in social media and other applications, including working knowledge of Adobe After Effects and/or InDesign.
