Job Summary/Basic Function:
TEACHING: Applied instruction in jazz trumpet with an emphasis on lead trumpet playing will form the core of the teaching assignment. In addition to the applied instruction, the initial appointment will include one or more of the following duties: teach courses in improvisation; teach courses in the pedagogy of improvisation; direct a Jazz Lab Band; coach jazz small groups; teach courses in jazz history. Also required: recruit, retain, and mentor a stellar cohort of undergraduate and graduate lead trumpeters; and other duties as assigned by the Division of Jazz Studies or the College of Music.
RESEARCH/CREATIVE ACTIVITIES: Maintain a national and international profile as a professional jazz performer, with emphasis on lead trumpet playing, in important professional venues; present at major state, national, and international conferences related to jazz performance and jazz pedagogy.
SERVICE: Serve on Division, College, and University committees; serve in professional organizations supporting jazz and/or commercial music; support the recruiting activities of the College; other duties as assigned by the College of Music or the Division of Jazz Studies.

Minimum Qualifications:
An earned master's degree in trumpet or jazz studies; evidence of excellence as a performer and teacher; evidence of effective student recruiting and retention; evidence of collegiality. In exceptional cases, professional experience may be accepted in place of an earned master's degree.
Preferred Qualifications:
An earned doctorate in trumpet or jazz studies; evidence of excellence at a national or international level as a concert and recording artist; evidence of collaboration with industry leaders in jazz performance; successful college teaching experience; evidence of successful student mentoring.
