Asst/Assoc Director of Undergraduate Studies and Online and Professional Education

The School of Modern Languages (https://modlangs.gatech.edu/) at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta invites applications for an Academic Professional to serve as Assistant or Associate Director of Undergraduate Studies and Online and Professional Education. This position is a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure-track faculty position for twelve months. The position is annually renewable, with an anticipated start date of May 1, 2019.

Integrating key components of successful academic program management, the position spans the following areas of responsibility: a) administering the School’s multiple undergraduate degree programs, course scheduling, student advising, and assessment; b) fostering and coordinating curricular enhancement in online instruction and professional, executive, and continuing education; c) contributing to the scholarship of teaching and learning; and d) providing instruction in Linguistics or one of the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, German, French, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Persian, Russian or Spanish. The candidate will be expected to teach three courses per academic year. This position will report to the School Chair and will work closely with the Director of Undergraduate Studies and the Language Program Directors.

Qualified candidates should hold a terminal degree conferred prior to the anticipated appointment start date, offer demonstrated competence in language learning and intercultural pedagogy, and have experience in student facing interactions.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

• General student advisement and support
• Liaise with student advisory committee/association
• Coordinate, manage, and expand online instruction and professional education programs
• Lead undergraduate program recruitment, marketing, and retention activities
• Administer scheduling of all undergraduate and graduate classes in the School
• Contribute to undergraduate program planning and program development
• Manage undergraduate program assessment
• Identify and market internship opportunities for undergraduate students
• Serve as key contact for the School’s students with campus-wide career development activities
• Manage alumni and degree/minor/certificate program records
• Manage undergraduate student awards and student association activities

Engagement in active scholarship, publishing, and public engagement about language learning and intercultural studies with national and international exposure is desired. Teaching experience from a post-secondary academic setting is recommended. Candidates should also have a high level of comfort with a dynamic and fast-paced environment, engaging with students from diverse backgrounds, and serving in a mentorship role in the context of student life.

The School of Modern Languages emphasizes interactive learning and interdisciplinary study of languages and cultures. We offer an innovative B.S. degree in Applied Languages and Intercultural Studies (ALIS) as well as degrees in Global Economics and Modern Language (GEML) and International Affairs and Modern Languages (IAML). We have recently launched two Master’s programs, an MS in Applied Languages and Intercultural studies and an MS in Global Media Cultures. The school is home to approximately 60 full- and part-time faculty members.
