Job Description Summary

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available in the research group of Dr. Xiaocun Lu in the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Science at Clarkson University, located in Upstate New York. We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scholar to conduct research in the fields of mechano-chemistry and mechanoresponsive materials. Specifically, our research projects involve a mechanistic understanding of mechano-activated chemical bonds as well as the development of mechano-sensitive polymeric materials and self-healing materials.
The successful candidate is expected to 1) be highly self-motivated and capable of conducting independent research supported by a strong academic record; 2) have a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or closely related fields, conferred within the last five years or expected in 2019; and 3) demonstrate expertise in organic and polymer synthesis, supramolecular self-assembly, or synthetic polymeric materials. Extensive research experience with fluorescent sensors, nanoparticle functionalization, non-Newtonian fluids, or computational modeling (DFT or MD in polymer systems) is a plus.

The Lu Research Group (www.luresearchgroup.com) at Clarkson University is an interdisciplinary and collaborative research group with a research focus on the development of stimuli-responsive polymeric materials. Dr. Xiaocun Lu joined Clarkson University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular Science in fall 2018. He received his Ph.D. in polymer science at the University of Akron under the guidance of Professor George R. Newkome. Before taking a faculty position at Clarkson, he served as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Professor Jeffrey S. Moore’s group at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His primary research interests include mechanoresponsive materials, supramolecular self-assembly, and smart delivery systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research experiments in the fields of mechanochemistry and mechanoresponsive materials including polymer synthesis, structural analysis, and materials characterization.
  • Collect and analyze experimental data using specialized skills.
  • Document results and observations for manuscript drafting and publication.
  • Assist the Principal Investigator in the development of grant proposals.
  • Participate in collaborative projects with coworkers from other research groups.
  • Carry out administrative and management work in the Lu Research Group.
  • Perform equipment maintenance and order lab supplies for the Lu Research Group.
  • Engage in the dissemination of the research projects by presentations in academic conferences, workshops, and seminars.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Principal Investigator.
