    Austin Community College District (ACC) is an Hispanic-Serving Institution. ACC currently enrolls approximately 41,500 credit students in each Fall and Spring semester, over half of whom are non-white. In Fall 2017, ACC's students were 45% White, 36% Latinx, 8% African-American, 5% Asian, <1% Pacific Islander, <1% Native-American, and 4% multiracial.     This position will teach courses in the Visual Communication Department's User Experience Design degree area which may include (but are not limited to) subjects such as: Design Research, Product Design, Prototyping, and User Interface Design.

    Responsible to prepare and deliver coursework in engaging, innovative, and discipline-appropriate ways that reflect a commitment to success equity, respect for diversity, an understanding of culturally responsive teaching, and knowledge of the teaching field. Meets professional standards for faculty in accordance with college policies and procedures.Principal Responsibilities and Duties

  • Prepare and teach courses in the field of User Experience Design to a diverse student population based on the department's approved course learning outcomes, utilizing a variety of instructional strategies appropriate to the needs of community college students and the standards of the discipline.
  • Evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback reflecting program learning outcomes and departmental expectations.
  • Provide teaching and mentoring services to students in a manner which does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, protected veteran status, political affiliation, or other protected categories.
  • Remain current in the field through a variety of professional development activities.
  • Support division and department goals through active and collegial engagement in decision-making and unit-level planning.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the department chair, dean, and/or associate vice president, vice president, executive vice president.
  • Technology

      Demonstrated proficiency using computer applications, online resources, and other technologies for the classroom. Demonstrated proficiency using an online learning management system such as Blackboard to develop and build course content and perform administrative duties (posting office hours, syllabi, etc.)Demonstrated proficiency with Mac OS.

  • Required Education

  • Required EducationIn accordance with SACSCOC accreditation requirements:
      Bachelor's degree in Art, Visual Communication, Commercial Art, Computer Graphics, Graphic Design, Interactive Media or Interactive Technology, and 3 year non-teaching industry-relevant work experience, and evidence of training in digital media; OR Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Human Computer Interaction, Interaction or Interactive Design, English and/or Technical Communication, Interface Design, UI Design, Visual Design, User Experience Design, Web Design, and 3 year non-teaching industry-relevant work experience, and evidence of training in digital media; OR Bachelor's degree in a related design, computer science, or art subfield, and 3 years non-teaching industry-relevant work experience, and evidence of training in digital media; OR Associate degree in one of the above areas and and 3 years non-teaching industry-relevant work experience, and evidence of training in digital media.
    SACSCOC requirements may differ depending on the courses taught within the discipline. Preferred Education
      Bachelor's degree in Human Computer Interaction, Interaction or Interactive Design, Interface Design, Visual Design or User Experience.
  • Required Work Experience (Workforce Programs)

    In accordance with SACSCOC accreditation requirements, SACSCOC work experience and education requirements may differ depending on the courses taught within the discipline. Please see the current year Faculty Qualifications Table located at www.austincc.edu/facstaff/faculty-credentials for requirements to teach IMED and UXUI courses under the Visual Communication Department.
    Preferred Work Experience
    • Three years of teaching experience including curriculum development.
    • Three or more years of professional experience as a member of the UX/UI design team, as Visual Designer, Design Researcher, UX Designer, Interaction Designer, Experience Designer, Information Designer, or Design Coder.

    Special Requirements
      Reliable transportation may be required for teaching at multiple campus locations.Classes may be scheduled in morning, afternoon and evening time slots.Able to document training in digital media.

    • Knowledge of subject matter and related and/or relevant topics and issues in the discipline.
    • Knowledge of effective instructional techniques and innovative modes of course delivery adaptable to a variety of learning styles.

    Knowledge
    Conversant of best practices in using current technologies in the classroom and in conveying online course content in the learning management systems (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas) in the classroom.Extensive knowledge of the discipline, subject matter, and related and/or relevant topics and issues in the teaching discipline such as:
      the role of a user experience designer as part of a multi-disciplinary team;the best use of software tools for user experience design;strong interests and capabilities in the design and development of engaging user experiences for digital products; anda thorough understanding of contemporary user-centered design methodologies such as user research, participatory design, prototyping, and user testing.
