Associate degree (A.S., A.A.) or two year technical certificate in English, Journalism, Marketing, Communication, or Public Relations; and 3 years related experience.

Purpose of Job

The Staff Writer will prepare written documents to communicate complex and technical information in ways that can be easily understood by non-technical audiences. Assistance will be given to media initiatives including: press releases, brochures, media advisories, annual reports, research-based and scholarly publications, instructional manuals, as well as feature articles for the Ag magazine and newsletter publications. As support staff, this position will be responsible for helping to gather, develop, and determine the best way to communicate and disseminate technical information to Alcorn’s Extension community.

Scope of Responsibilities

This position will assist the Associate Director for Extension and Extension personnel with written communications. Under the general supervision of the Associate Director for Extension, the Extension Staff Writer will work collaboratively with Extension Specialists, Educators, Support Staff and Students to ensure all outgoing documents are easy to read and error free. Opportunities may arise for the Extension Staff Writer to create documents for digital media and grant writing purposes.

Essential Job Functions

Organize and write supporting research documents;
Use photographs, drawings, diagrams, animations, and charts that increase readers’ understanding;
Select appropriate medium for message or audience;
Standardize content across platforms and media;
Check all written text to ensure it is well written and logically structured; and
Correct grammar and spelling.
All other duties assigned by the Associate Director for Extension.


Bachelors degree in Mass Communications, English, or associated areas.

The successful candidate should:
Possess an excellent command of English language, both written and oral;
Understand and communicate technical information in a non-technical comprehensible manner;
Translate technical information for readers with non-technical backgrounds;
Be attentive to details;
Be proficient with computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Publisher;
Be able to work effectively with a diverse group of people to deliver content for academic and non academic audiences; and
Possess the ability to maintain high quality work while meeting strict deadlines.
