The Communication Department is a diverse group of scholars, teachers, and students covering many areas of specialization. The Department offers introductory classes that fill GEP requirements, advanced classes for Communication majors, and graduate seminars.

The Department has 657 majors in three concentrations. All programs offer a great deal of student choice in courses and electives, allowing the pursuit of either a broad educational experience or focused study. We also offer Masters Programs, and a PhD degree in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media in cooperation with the Department of English.

The Department has 21 tenure-track faculty, 10 non-tenure track faculty, and 5 staff.

Essential Job Duties

The Communication Department seeks a Department Head who is an innovative, effective leader with a vision for the department.

The Department Head reports to the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and is responsible for the administration of the department. The responsibilities of the Head include: recruiting, appointing, and supervising faculty and staff; managing departmental budgets and enrollment; providing leadership to facilitate, support, and promote research, service, outreach, and graduate and undergraduate education in the department: taking the lead in aligning the departmental mission and vision with the NC State strategic plan; and promoting the department through leadership in college, university, and external initiatives.

This is a supervisory position. Supervisory positions conduct interviews, make final hiring decisions, provide salary recommendations, monitor and assign work, counsel and discipline employees under direct supervision, develop work plans and conduct performance appraisals for permanent employees.

Other Work/ResponsibilitiesMinimum Education/Experience

Candidates must possess a doctorate in Communication or an equivalent degree and must have an active record of research, teaching, publication and other professional activities.

Only tenured faculty in the NC State Communication Department are eligible for this position.

Departmental Required Skills

Candidates should possess strong managerial skills, a collegial leadership style, and the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and other stakeholders.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

The following are preferred: the rank of Professor, experience in university administration, and experience working with both internal units and external organizations.
