Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job
Serves the Sam Houston State University Proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine, in the Department of Surgery as Chair of Surgical Specialties. Provides leadership to the department and acts as a role model for medical students interested in general surgery and surgical specialties. The position reports to the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. The proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine is currently in applicant status and is seeking accreditation from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation. The university is emphasizing primary care, general surgery, psychiatry and other specialties in need in the State of Texas. The leadership has developed an integrated curriculum merging basic science instruction with clinical learning. The Chair of Surgical Specialties is responsible for the curriculum, content and teaching of surgical concepts in the Introduction to Clinical Medicine course, aspects of surgical diagnosis and care in the systems courses, scholarship and research in the department, assuring quality patient care and fostering collaboration and interdisciplinary learning. Members of the Surgery Department will be expected to participate in lectures, the physical exam course, case-based learning sessions, preparation for clerkships, procedural skills training and OSCE’s. The members of the department will also participate in the SHSU practice plan. The person selected must be comfortable working in preclinical and clinical education, as well as evaluation of curriculum and students through various learning and assessment methods. The department will be responsible for aiding GME programs affiliated with the COM in creating surgical residencies and supporting faculty development. Note: This position is currently located in Huntsville, TX but will move to Conroe upon completion of the medical school facility.

Educational Requirements for the Position
The successful candidate will have a DO or MD degree from an accredited medical school with residency training in General Surgery, current ABMS or AOA board certification or eligibility, and eligibility for, or a current license to practice in Texas.

Experience Required for the Position
A background in medical education is required with experience working in a department of general surgery at a medical school or residency program. A desire to teach at the Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education levels are necessary.

Other Requirements for the Position
Proven leadership in medical education. Ability to communicate and work with other faculty, medical students, physician preceptors and college administration. Possession of excellent written and verbal communication skills and capacity to demonstrate personal initiative and abilities to deal with a rapidly changing environment are essential. Other duties as assigned.
