To provide instruction of Public Health-related courses as a member of an instructional team of full-time, adjunct, and part-time instructors in the Health and Human Performance Department. Instruction is for students in Associate degree programs, including the Public Health AAOT transfer degree. This position includes teaching classes that could include Intro to Public Health, Orientation to Public Health Professions, Health and Fitness, Fit/First Aid, Stress Management, Holistic Wellness, or any other classes, as assigned. The instructor must teach, facilitate student discussion, develop meaningful learning experiences to meet student-learning outcomes, assess student performance, provide student advising, and manage course curricula.

Terms of Employment

•Full-time Faculty, 1.0 FTE, Exempt. This is a full-time, tenure-track probationary position commencing September 2019. Hours of work may include evening or weekend teaching assignments.
•$48,350 – $57,850 per year depending on experience.
•Represented by the Faculty Forum Collective Bargaining Agreement.
•Initial assignment will be at the Bend Campus.
•Official transcripts are required upon hire. Applicants anticipating Degree completion must supply a letter from his/her university stating the degree title and that the degree will be granted by that date.
•Upon hire, must pass criminal background check and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.
•May include travel throughout the College district.

Essential Functions:

1.Provide instruction in area of discipline, using approved course outcome guides. Teaching assignments may be during the day (including early morning), evening, or weekend, and could include classes taught at any of the College campuses.

2.Provide student advising and assistance in areas of course selection, career planning, job placement and employment follow-up.

3.Hold at least five scheduled office hours per week for student help sessions and program assistance.

4.Participate in department meetings, curriculum revision, course assessment, program assessment, and program review.

5.Engage in regular professional growth activities, remain current in the field, and maintain current credentials or licensures as required by the program.

6.Participate in service to the college. This may include participating in College committees, taskforces, peer teams, or other activities.

7.Provide meaningful, professional service to the community, businesses, public agencies, and other organizations.

8.Perform other essential job functions as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

SPECIFIC ESSENTIAL FACULTY FUNCTIONS

1.Provide instruction in Health and Human Performance. The main courses are the pre-Public Health core courses approved for articulation with OSU and OHSU-PSU: HHP100, HHP210, and HHP110.Other HHP classes may be assigned. Some courses may be taught in a hybrid or online environment. Full-time classroom teaching requires 15 load units (LU) per quarter (minimum of 45 LU per academic year – Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters combined), involving 24+ students in most classes. Teaching assignments may include courses taught during the morning, afternoon, and/or evening, weekday and weekend courses, classes taught in an online format or hybrid environment, and classes taught on or off campus in Bend, Madras, Prineville, or Redmond.

2.PROFESSIONAL IMPROVEMENT: Serve as a role model and supervisor in Public Health. Create a professional improvement plan that provides the instructor with relevant current peer-reviewed information/data to be shared with students in order to enhance quality education.

3.COMMUNITY SERVICE: This includes teaching both credit and non-credit courses in the various communities of the College district, as other responsibilities allow, and articulating with members of the community regarding education interests and needs and the College’s ability to provide educational services. Community service also includes developing seminars and short courses, as other responsibilities allow.

4.STUDENT ADVISING: in public health, wellness coaching, exercise sciences, and other general education advising as assigned; faculty provides academic advising to approximately 30-40 students. A minimum of five office hours per week are required for every tenure track faculty for student help sessions and program assistance.

5.COLLEGE SERVICE: This may include program and curriculum development, participating on College committees, task-force groups, faculty organizations, and professional advisory committee meetings.

6.Work with appropriate College personnel to write proposals for program funds.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.

1.Thorough knowledge and skills in the field of Public Health & experience teaching Intro to Public Health.

2.Knowledge of and ability to effectively apply teaching and instructional methodologies and pedagogical approaches to various levels of learners from diverse backgrounds in a variety of settings, including traditional and hybrid instructional methods at the community college level.

3.Ability to apply authentic professional examples of public health models and tools from public health practice to enhance student learning.

4.Familiarity with and ability to operate classroom and office technology including multi-media (computers, LCD projectors, document cameras, videos, web, & written materials).

5.Ability to orally communicate effectively with others, using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.

6.Ability to communicate effectively in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services.

7.Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature.

8.Ability to work with HHP faculty and other COCC staff at all levels.

9.Willingness to travel and/or teach at various hours, days, and locations, as required.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:

Work is performed in classroom and office environments with the ability to sit or stand at workstation for extended periods. The employee is regularly required to use computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. The employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary conversations. Computer screen is used frequently. Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs. Travel throughout the College district as needed. A flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the position responsibilities. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications:

•Minimum of master’s degree in Public Health (MPH) or other closely-related public health equivalent
•Minimum of two years teaching experience at a community college.
•Public Health teaching experience at the college and/or university level
•Hybrid or online teaching experience with health curriculum.
•Evidence of a pattern of positive student evaluations.

Special Qualifications:

Strongly Preferred:

•At least two years experience working in the Public Health field (non-academic setting) .
•Successful completion of HOT (Hybrid & Online Instructor Training) Course.

Optional (not required) Certifications:

•Current First Aid (including CPR) Instructor Certification by either the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or National Safety Council.

Organization

Central Oregon Community College, the oldest two-year college in Oregon, provides comprehensive college services to the residents of its 10,000-square-mile district.

COCC offers two-year associate degrees, transfer/lower division programs, career and technical education degrees and certificates, developmental courses, continuing education and community learning classes, industry-specific training programs, and business management assistance.

The College's main campus is located on the western edge of Bend, a city known for its natural beauty and its proximity to diverse recreational opportunities. The location affords spectacular views of the mountains from nearly every point on the 201-acre campus. The Redmond Campus, located 20 miles north on 25 acres near the Redmond Municipal Airport, offers all of the courses necessary to earn an associate degree. In addition, it is the home of the Manufacturing and Applied Technology Center.

Thanks to a successful 2009 bond measure, COCC has constructed campus facilities in Madras and Prineville, opening the two campuses in 2011. In Bend, new health careers and science centers opened in 2012 as well as a technology center in Redmond.

A branch of Oregon State University is located on the Bend campus. OSU-Cascades offers upper division and graduate programs on the COCC campus.
