DescriptionThe School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs invites applications for a full-time instructor in the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Criminal Justice and Master of Criminal Justice (MCJ) programs. This is an academic year (9 month), renewable, non-tenure-track position.  The instructor will primarily teach undergraduate-level courses in Criminal Justice. Teaching assignments may also include undergraduate courses in Public Administration and graduate courses in Criminal Justice and Public Administration. The anticipated starting date is August 19, 2019. 

 The School of Public Affairs (SPA) is a dynamic learning community serving those who seek to make a difference in the public sector. Degrees offered by the School of Public Affairs include the Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice, the Master of Criminal Justice, the Master of Public Administration, and a dual Master's in Criminal Justice and Public Administration. The school also offers a number of popular certificates. Our programs emphasize critical thinking and analytical skills necessary for leading and managing effectively in a diverse society.  The instructor will contribute to the School of Public Affairs mission to provide high-quality, student-centered instruction. The position requires a flexible teaching schedule (e.g., possible evening and weekend classes) and course formats will include face-to-face, hybrid, and online. The instructor will be expected to prepare and teach courses in the undergraduate criminal justice core curriculum (BA in CJ program requirements) and contribute to an existing or develop a new and innovative option area. Highly competitive candidates will be qualified to prepare and teach multiple courses within the undergraduate core curriculum and within the Master of Criminal Justice degree curriculum. Additional teaching related duties may include mentoring students on independent studies, serving as graduate thesis/capstone committee members, and contributing to curriculum development in the criminal justice program. The typical course load for an instructor is eight courses total (e.g., four per semester) taught during the fall and spring terms. Summer course assignments may be available for additional compensation.

 Additionally, the instructor will contribute to the mission and service duties of the School of Public Affairs and University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS). Examples of service activities include but are not limited to: participating in faculty meetings; serving on Criminal Justice, School of Public Affairs, and UCCS campus committees; participating in student recruitment activities; helping to build/maintain partnerships between the community and School of Public Affairs; and other activities as appropriate. The typical work distribution for an instructor is 80% teaching and 20% service.

 Salary Range and Benefits

• $40,000-$45,000

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:

• Has obtained at a minimum a Master's degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a related discipline from an accredited institution, or a Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school by the position's priority review date (January 15, 2019).
• At least 5 months of teaching experience, which may include teaching at the secondary or postsecondary levels and/or leading professional trainings.

Preferred Qualifications:

• At least one year of higher education teaching experience in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a related discipline.
• Evidence of successful teaching in multiple formats (face-to-face, online or hybrid).
• At least one year of applied work experience in the criminal justice system.
• Areas of specialization are open, but preference will be given to applicants who can teach within a current option area(s) or certificate (Forensics, Law Enforcement, Law, or Homeland Security) and/or will contribute to the creation of a new and innovative option area/certificate within the criminal justice curriculum.
