Job Summary:

This professional-level position resides in the Office of Institutional Planning (OIP) and is responsible for providing technical expertise regarding architectural and planning matters for the CU Denver Campus. The employee in this position provides direction, consultation and coordination on architectural issues regarding campus planning, the internal and external campus environment, and design and construction projects during all project phases. This individual consults with external affiliates regarding projects including the University of Colorado Design Review Board, and Auraria Higher Education Center Design Review Teams and participates in Campus Master Planning, Capital Projects and Design Review Processes for the Denver Campus.  The Office of Institutional Planning is responsible for the facilitation of the institutional planning process and providing necessary planning analysis and knowledge to assist campus leadership.  Continued development and maintenance of the institutional master plan and the coordination of various institutional planning efforts with the master plan and program planning efforts are essential responsibilities of the office.  The CU Denver Campus Office of Institutional Planning serves all units, schools, and the entire administration of the University of Colorado Denver Campus and its affiliates. The Office of Institutional Planning works closely with the Facilities Projects and Facilities Operations teams for CU Denver and reports to the Senior Vice-Chancellor for Administration and Finance for the CU Denver campus.  


Specific duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Providing direction to CU Denver staff, faculty, students and administrative leadership on all matters related to the physical campus environment.
  • Serves as the principal campus liaison with the University of Colorado Design Review Board (DRB) and Auraria Design Review Teams (DRT). This includes:
  • Working with the CU Anschutz Campus Architect to amend the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus Guidelines and Standards for Construction Projects as required.
  • Working with AHEC staff to amend the Auraria Campus Design Guidelines as needed.
  • Producing design guidelines for the Denver Campus as needed and assigned. 
  • Serve as the OIP lead on capital projects as assigned from concept to construction documents which includes:
    • Producing a program plan or supervising the consultant team who has been hired to produce the program plan.
    • Gaining all necessary approvals for the program plan and the project through the design development phase including the Design Review Board or Design Review Team, Board of Regents, and Capital Development Committee.
    • Establishing an oversight committee for the project and acting as chair of the committee (or assigning that role to a faculty or staff member).
    • Working with the design consultant to set up a project and meeting structure to ensure broad feedback from project constituent groups and those who will provide support to the building after it is open.
    • In addition to the specific tasks mentioned, generally function as the project lead through the design development phase.
  • Review drawings for all Denver Campus projects at the Schematic Design, Design Development and Construction Documents phases for compliance with university design guidelines and adherence to the campus aesthetic vision and the campus master plan. 
  • Serve as chair of the Exterior and Interior Signage Standards Review Committee. This involves the following:
    • Convening meetings of the committee as needed to review signage proposals, discuss ongoing signage efforts, needs and concerns and update policies, guidelines and procedures.
    • Updating the signage policies, guidelines and procedures as needed.
    • Producing written recommendations for signage proposals based on committee feedback and providing the recommendations to the appropriate parties.
    • Recruiting new committee members as needed.
  • Develop and administer a process for campus monuments and other donor opportunities.
  • Act as campus representative on any CU System initiatives related to design or campus aesthetic.
  • Coordinate architectural and construction plans, diagrams, design guidelines and other architectural documents for the university.
  • Coordinate and collaborate as assigned on projects undertaken by exterior stakeholders including City of Denver, Downtown Denver Partnership and the Auraria Higher Education Center.
  • Direct the use and interpretation of design guidelines for all external architects, internal designers and contractors with oversight authority in the application of these guidelines.
  • Interpret master plan documents for dimensional definition of building sites, roadways, walkways and other landscape features.
  • Maintain current reference or samples of appropriate design materials and color palettes.
  • Provides leadership in the process for selecting consultants and sub-consultants including architects, engineers landscape architects, and developers. This includes preparing scopes of work as assigned, consulting on the selection process, and participating on selection committees as assigned.
  • Provides architectural materials for inclusion in program plans, master plans, presentations and other documents.
  • Maintains an architectural history of campus development.
  • Serves on various standing and ad hoc committees as requested and performs other related duties as assigned. 

Salary and Benefits:

The hiring salary for this position is negotiable and commensurate with skills and experience.  This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Urban Design, Architecture or equivalent
  • Six (6) years active working experience in architecture

Conditions of Employment

  • Must currently have an active Colorado Architecture License, or be able to obtain said licensure within 6 months of hire. Failure to obtain and/or maintain said licensure may result in separation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in architecture, or closely related field
  • Experience working in higher education, either directly or as a consultant on higher education projects Experience designing or managing projects involving student housing and/or engineering
  • Experience in landscape architecture
  • Experience in the design and management of capital projects
  • NCARB registration is preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • A comprehensive knowledge of architectural and design principles is required.
  • A successful candidate must demonstrate knowledge of all aspects of campus design and construction, contributing to architectural issues including infrastructure, facility siting, interior design and finishes. Highly desired attributes of this position include:
  • Strong interpersonal skills and abilities, including excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities and experience. 
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, the Adobe creative suite and other software useful in the design, project management and document preparation processes.
