Post-Doctoral Fellow

Overall Description of Responsibility or Nature of Work:This position reports directly to Lauren Fishbein, MD, PhD.  Neuroendocrine tumors can occur in all organs of the body and are unique in their capacity to secrete hormones.  The mechanisms of metastases and aggressive clinical behavior are unknown, and there are no known curative therapies for metastatic disease.  Our laboratory is working to understand drivers of metastatic disease, identify biomarkers to predict aggressive disease and identify therapeutic targets.
Area of Primary Responsibility (80%):  The primary responsibility of the post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory will be to assume the role of work in the area of neuroendocrine tumor biology and genetics.  Activities related to this responsibility include but are not limited to:
  • Performing molecular and cell biology techniques related to novel genes involved in neuroendocrine tumors.
  • Performing data analysis including basic biostatistics and bioinformatics.
  • Developing hypotheses and designing experiments to test these hypotheses.
  • Overseeing other members of the laboratory including PRAs and students.
  • Meeting with the PI on a regular basis to provide updates and progress, discuss problems and devise solutions, and summarize and interpret data.
  • Prepare data for presentations at regional and national meetings.
  • Publish data in original manuscripts, as well as reviews, etc.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned, for successful and timely completion of research projects.
Other responsibilities and areas of focus (20%): As this post-doctoralfellowship training is considered a career-development period, it is expectedthat a portion of time be dedicated to:
  • Enhancing general knowledge in related fields by attending on campus seminars, research conferences and grand rounds.
  • Attending and presenting at weekly lab meetings.
  • Presenting at local, regional and national meetings.
  • Establishing an independent line of research in an area of related interest to the PI that the post-doctoral fellow can continue after the training period if that is in-line with the fellow’s career goals. This will be achieved by:
  • Working on grant writing skills
  • Discussing ideas for future career development grants
  • Working on presentation skills regarding data obtained and hypotheses generated


Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Graduationfrom an accredited college or university with a PhD and/or MD.
  • Atleast three years of experience with molecular and cell biology techniques.
  • Bioinformaticsunderstanding with some experience using either publically available databasesor personally generated data.
  • Excellentcommunication skills (verbal and written) using the English language.
  • Abilityto work independently within the laboratory.

Desired or preferred:

  • Experiencein cancer biology research
