JobSummary:

The Department of Pediatrics, Section of Hematology, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation has an opening for a full time Open Rank faculty member. This position will have approximately 75% of its time spent as a faculty member practicing Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplantation independently in the inpatient, outpatient, or research settings. The remaining 25% of time will be dedicated to the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCBD) Inpatient Medical Director role.


Examples of Work Performed:

Clinical and/or Research Responsibilities (75% effort): 

  • Provide comprehensive sub-specialty medical care to PediatricHematology, Oncology, and Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Transplant patients and theirfamilies in both Inpatient and Outpatient Settings. Manage patient care incollaboration with other physicians, care providers, and other members of aninterdisciplinary team in an academic medical center; 
  • Participate in clinical teaching and academic activities; Protectionfor research-related activities will be commensurate with independent fundingobtained to provide salary support for this allocation of effort;
  • Actively supervise and mentor medical students, residents, fellows, andgraduate students, providing clinical education, career and life guidance,mentorship, and teaching;
  • Shared weekday coverage as the attending physician responsible foroversight of the inpatient Oncology services. Currently this translates to approximately 6 to 8 weeks per year andincludes overnight coverage (out of house) during inpatient service weeks;
  • Shared holiday and weekend call with other Hem/Onc/BMT faculty members;
  • Provide coverage outpatient clinics at Children's Hospital Colorado, which mayalso include occasional clinic coverage at the South and/or Colorado SpringsCampuses;
  • Shared coverage in the CCBD Procedure Clinic approximately 10-12 half-days peryear;
  • Provide telemedicine consultation to referring providers and care inconjunction with other CCBD faculty;
  • Enroll, treat, and monitor patients on a variety of clinical trials asappropriate for disease status and eligibility
CCBD Inpatient Medical Director Responsibilities (25% effort): 
  • Ensure optimal organization in the CCBD inpatient unit on the Anschutz MedicalCampus to provide the highest level of patient and family care, workingcollaboratively with nursing and administrative leadership;
  • Partner with the Outpatient and Network of Care Medical Directors, CCBD NursingLeadership, and Section Chief in the CCBD to harmonize practices, expectations,and performance across the Section;
  • Provide input to annual reviews of Section members according to Department ofPediatrics and School of Medicine policies and procedures;
  • Assist with physician informatics and serve as liaison to CAS and clinicalinformatics teams, and guide efforts to develop innovative technical solutionsfor projects;
  • Guide, enhance, and oversee development of clinical care pathways, with a focuson embedding pathways more seamlessly within physician workflows, providingreal-time provider-level feedback on performance, and creating pathwayreporting tools that support improvement in clinical outcomes;
  • Oversee responses to and work with Patient Relations departments to supporthospital communications with families and patient concerns;
  • Work to embed diagnostic reasoning safety nets into clinical pathwaydevelopment to ensure accurate use of pathways for patient care;
  • Partner with Hospital and Department leadership to develop and implementstrategic plans, annual goals, and performance metrics for quality care andpatient safety; align programs and initiatives to vision and strategy for allmedical operations;
  • Work with the Chief Medical and Patient Safety Officer (CM/PSO), collaboratingwith physician, and other clinical and administrative leaders to set andachieve annual and strategic goals for patient safety; create and uses tool fortracking and monitoring outcomes/performance towards goals; and providefeedback and guidance to physician leadership on progress towards goals;
  • Collaborate with medical staff and clinical leaders to improve the quality andsafety of care at all CHCO CCBD locations;
  • Participate in patient care conferences and case reviews and root causeanalyses; help develop and recommend changes to diagnostic and treatmentprotocols, and clinical/operational systems to support best practices;
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with leaders across theorganization to ensure the adoption and maintenance of optimal clinicaloutcomes; make decisions that are inclusive of multiple perspectives to solveunderlying problems; 
  • Ensure compliance with standards and recommendations of the Joint Commission,applicable standards of relevant professional societies, and applicable local,state, and federal laws and regulations. Develop, maintain, and enforcesafety-related policies and procedures;
  • Work with applicable physician and hospital staff council to develop,implement, and monitor policies related to patient safety; review and approvechanges to internal processes while identifying and implementing processimprovements; 
  • Participate in the development of budget recommendations for operatingexpenditures and monitoring of budget for department. Collaborate with CM/PSOon prioritizing strategic investments in safety and patient care initiatives.

Salary and Benefits:

The hiring salary for this positionis $275,000 and is negotiable and commensurate with skills, experience, and service with the University of Colorado. This position is noteligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MD or DO degree;
  • Board Certified/Board Eligible in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology;
  • Current Colorado State Medical License and DEA certification; orability to obtain a Colorado State Medical License and DEA certification beforestart date;
  • 5-7 years' work experience in Hem/Onc/BMT.
The rank of Professor may be considered for an individual withappropriate, well-qualified academic experience.

  • Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal and sex-offenderbackground check;

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Record of sustained independent funding of clinical, translational, orlaboratory research;
  • Record of strong peer-reviewed publication and recognition as a leaderin the field of focus within pediatric hematology/oncology/BMT and sub-disciplines;
  • Leadership training in academic medicine.

Knowledge, Skills andAbilities:

  • Ability to independently care for and manage complex PediatricHematology/Oncology/BMT patients in an academic setting;
  • High customer service skills, team-based patient care, and ability to meetproductivity targets;
  • Care coordination, problem-solving, and teamwork and leadership engagement;
  • Personnel management including participating in and conducting annual reviews,ad hoc performance reviews, developing necessary performance improvement plans,and interactions with Human Resources, Academic Affairs and Patient Relationspersonnel as needed;
