TheUniversity of Colorado School of Medicine invites nominations and applicationsfor the position of Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and MolecularGenetics.  

 

TheDepartment of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics has 22 primary facultylocated on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. The department has aninternational reputation for research excellence, state-of-the art resources, ahighly interactive and collaborative culture, and outstanding trainingprograms.

 

TheDepartment had an annual budget of $17.5 million, approximately 45 percent ofwhich is derived from competitive extramural grants. Research in the departmentis built on a foundation of innovation and excellence, with strength in RNAbiology, structural biology and biochemistry, cancer research, genomics, yeastgenetics and molecular biology.  Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics faculty participateextensively in medical and graduate student education and postdoctoraltraining.

 

TheUniversity of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, one of four campuses in theUniversity of Colorado System, is the major academic medical center in theRocky Mountain region, and one of the largest and most comprehensive biomedicalresearch and clinical care centers in the western United States. The AnschutzMedical Campus is home to a NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center as wellas UCHealth’s University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado,and a new Veterans Affairs Hospital.

 

The CU Schoolof Medicine has distinctive and highly productive research programs fueled bymore than $421 million in awards per year in grants, including more than $221million from National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies. TheSchool’s total annual clinical and research revenue exceeds $1.5 billion peryear. The School of Medicine recently identified five focus areas for researchinvestment, with one—RNA Biology—having extensive involvement of Biochemistryand Molecular Genetics faculty. In addition, the School has investedsignificant resources to establish a state-of-the-art core facility forstructural biology that includes cryo-electron microscopy, x-raycrystallography, NMR, and proteomics and metabolomics. that is managed by theBiochemistry and Molecular Genetics Department. 

 

The Chairreports to the Dean of the School of Medicine and serves on the School ofMedicine’s Executive Committee. We are seeking a Chair with research experienceand leadership skills commensurate with a world class research-focuseddepartment. The Chair will be responsible for leading growth in theDepartment’s research portfolio and for promoting collaborative researchthroughout the School of Medicine and the Anschutz Medical Campus. The Chair isexpected to maintain and enhance diversity amongst the Department’s faculty,trainees and staff, enhance the Department’s educational programs, and assuretransparency in the Department’s administration, management, budgetary planningand implementation.

 

TheUniversity of Colorado School of Medicine is seeking a Chair for the Departmentof Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics to provide strategic and operationalleadership to this Department.  Reportingto the Dean of the School of Medicine, and serving on the School of MedicineExecutive Committee, the Chair will be responsible for leading a world classresearch-focused department and for maintaining an outstanding externallyfunded research program. The Chair will be responsible for leading additionalgrowth in the Department’s research portfolio and enhancing collaborativeresearch throughout the School of Medicine and the Anschutz Medical Campus. TheChair will support academic programs for medical students, graduate students,and postdoctoral teaching and training, as well as research activities of theDepartment.

The Departmentchair is expected to work collegially with other chairs and center directors atthe School and with colleagues, at the Anschutz Medical Campus and NationalJewish Health.


The nextChair of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics will be responsible for overseeingand maintaining excellence in the Department’s educational programs, as well asgrowing the research programs in collaboration with the School of Medicine andits affiliated hospitals.  The positionrequires excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to bring together adiverse group of individuals to advance the common goals of the Department andthe institution.  The successfulcandidate will be a strong leader and have a proven track record ofadministration, education and research, as well as a keen understanding of thecomplexities of an academic Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, andthe ability to lead the further growth and development of the Department in allmissions.

 Major Responsibilities
  • Incollaboration with the leadership of the University of Colorado School ofMedicine, define the mission and establish the strategic direction for theDepartment, ensuring the necessary financial and human resources to achieve theagreed-upon objectives.
  • Maintainan internationally recognized externally funded research program
  • Supportand enhance inter-departmental graduate and post-doctoral training and theschool’s undergraduate medical program. 
  • Defineand lead the Department’s research strategy by expanding and strengthening research.  Support principal investigators and otherfaculty within the Department in efforts to secure NIH and other grant fundingto support research priorities.  Ensure adeliberate investment into research activities and priorities within theDepartment.
  • Supervise,prepare, implement and monitor the Department budget that encompasses allfunding sources and ensures compliance with grant, legislative andinstitutional guidelines. 
  • Recruit,hire, and retain outstanding faculty from diverse backgrounds.  Ensure an atmosphere of support anddevelopment for all faculty, with an understanding of the challenges that mayface minority faculty.
  • Encourageethical, professional practice across the Department.

Research Program: The successful candidatewill possess a successful track record in academic research endeavors. Thiswill be demonstrated by:

  • A strongtrack record of NIH and private research funding
  • Evidenceof outstanding peer review publications
  • Demonstrationof international and national recognition in their scientific field

QualificationsMinimum Requirements: Doctorate with a focus on biochemistry, molecular genetics and/or structural biology and a strong track record of research accomplishments and independent funding, meeting the requirements for a faculty appointment at the Professor level.
