Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

10 years of research administration experience at a Research 1 institution of higher education (or major research institution), with progressively higher levels of responsibility throughout, and supervisory and managerial experience.

Thorough knowledge of federal granting and accounting policies and rules.

An advanced degree (such as JD, PhD or MBA) and experience as a director of sponsored projects pre or post award office is preferred.

Knowledge of research administration software (UGA currently uses Huron Click and Content 7). Experience in guiding the implementation and maintenance of these systems both in isolation and as they interact with institution wide financial and reporting systems like People Soft and others.

Position Summary

The University of Georgia (UGA) invites applications and nominations for the position of Executive Director of Sponsored Projects Administration.

The University of Georgia, with its rapidly expanding grants portfolio, seeks an experienced and visionary Executive Director of Sponsored Projects Administration to lead and advance its recently integrated, pre/post-award sponsored programs office. Reporting to the Vice President for Research, the Executive Director will work closely and collaboratively with colleagues in UGA’s Finance and Administration division, as well as administrators and faculty across the university to support an expanding and diverse portfolio of grants and contracts (examples of funding agencies include NSF, NIH, USDA, DOE, etc.). S/he will ensure the delivery of efficient, proactive, customer-friendly service, based on the latest best practices, that is aimed at furthering research initiatives across the enterprise while also ensuring all compliance standards are fully maintained. The Executive Director will serve as a key expert for sponsored programs and research administration for UGA and the UGA Research Foundation, Inc., and will be a contributing member of the Vice President for Research senior leadership team. S/he will be expected to promote a working environment that rewards new ideas and innovation, nurtures teamwork and collaboration, and promotes diversity. The Executive Director must effectively and efficiently manage budgets, identify and analyze appropriate performance metrics, evaluate personnel and positions, problem solve, and interface effectively with internal and external stakeholders. Direct the Pre Award and Post Award teams in Sponsored Projects Administration. Manage day-to-day activities of the office and ensure efficiency, accuracy, and strong customer service from SPA staff. Define and use metrics to analyze success and failures and increase productivity.

Help design and implement programs for the scalable growth of research administration. For example, continued expansion of the role of unit-based signature authorities across campus and quarterly outreach at Research Administration Discussion Group meetings for research administrators.

Serve as the expert and campus authority on research administration regardless of sponsor type – federal, state, non-profit, industry, etc. Being the expert means assisting faculty and staff in the preparation and submission of proposals, management of grants after they are awarded, and the successful closeout of projects, throughout administering and interpreting applicable federal and/or state laws and regulations regarded grants awarded. Actively collaborating with other units on campus to interpret regulations when necessary.
