Position Summary

The College of Veterinary Medicine (www.vet.uga.edu/) at the University of Georgia invites applications and nominations for a full-time academic position as head of the Department of Pathology and Executive Director of the Athens and Tifton Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories (http://vet.uga.edu/dlab/). We seek individuals with a solid foundation in anatomic or clinical pathology who are effective academic and administrative leaders and have a passion for development of excellence in instruction, diagnostic service, and research.

The successful applicant will join a team of 28 faculty members (including 21 veterinary pathologists), as well as residents, research scientists, graduate students, and research technicians. Research interests in the department are diverse and include the epidemiology and pathogenesis of diseases of food-producing, companion, avian, laboratory, wild, and aquatic animals; genomics and proteomics; animal models of human disease; tumor pathobiology; neuropathogenesis of rabies; soft tissue physiology and repair; and emergency preparedness. Additionally, the department and diagnostic laboratories develop and provide diagnostic anatomic and clinical pathology services to internal and external clients. University resources such as the high containment Animal Health Research Center (www.vet.uga.edu/ahrc), Center for Vaccines and Immunology (http://vet.uga.edu/cvi), Paul D. Coverdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences (www.ovpr.uga.edu/coverdell/), Biomedical and Health Sciences Institute (www.biomed.uga.edu/), the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center (www.ccrc.uga.edu/), Center for Food Safety (www.ugacfs.org/), as well as the Office of Research Services (http://www.ors.uga.edu/) provide access to state of the art facilities and research support services. Participation in the Georgia Clinical and Translational Science Alliance (http://georgiactsa.org/) and proximity to and ongoing departmental interactions with nearby facilities such as the Centers for Disease Control, Yerkes Primate Center, Atlanta Zoo, Georgia Aquarium, USDA-ARS laboratories, USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service Laboratories, and UGA Medical Partnership ensure a broad range of collaborative possibilities.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Desirable qualifications include previous administrative experience including management of personnel and budgets, and experience with program development in pathology-related instruction, research, and diagnostic or other professional service. Highly qualified applicants will possess a strong record of academic leadership, scholarship, administrative experience, strong communication and leadership skills, and evidence of active participation in pathology teaching, service, or research.
