Preferred Qualifications Position Summary

The University of Georgia Enterprise Information Technology Services (EITS) is seeking qualified candidates for a Network Administrator Principal position in Network Engineering. This Network Administrator Principal role is a senior technical position and is expected to possess the knowledge, skills and abilities to architect, orchestrate and implement enterprise network services and infrastructure. This position will work as part of a team responsible for the delivery and support of mission critical advanced network technologies to an 80K+ node local campus and extended campuses across the state.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

- Experience with enterprise or carrier class networking equipment (Juniper MX routers and SRX firewalls, Palo Alto, Fortinet, Cisco, Brocade)
-Enterprise level network management experience.
- Excellent working knowledge of IP networking.
- IGP routing protocols, specifically OSPF
- EGP routing protocols, specifically BGP
- Experience building technical documentation.
- Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision is required.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
- Working experience with Cisco VPN technology
- Working experience with Juniper, McAfee or other intrusion prevention technology

Physical Demands

Ability to lift and install rack based 2U network equipment. Ability to move from one office to another office on campus. Adequate vision, hearing and manual dexterity to connect network cabling (including fiber optics). Job takes place in cooled office environment and in a typical cooled Datacenter environment.

1. Evaluates, recommends, designs, and maintains network systems and applications that provide mission critical central services.
a. Develops and implements strategy for network service architecture.
b. Responsible for the implementation, management and support for enterprise network services.
d. Performs long-range and capacity planning to determine the type of resources needed to support expected volume, types of solutions best suited to needs
e. Performs initial setup, software installation, testing, and security hardening of network and security systems
f. Maintains software, including testing, evaluation and installation of new versions or authorized modifications to custom and vendor-supplied operating systems and related software applications
g. Works with other departments to implement/support critical network services
h. Patches network and security systems and applications; monitors production systems; implements system policies; schedules system processes such as backups; and executes recovery operations when necessary

a. Proactively advise management on ongoing needs and issues related to network and security infrastructure; communicate industry trends, standard methodologies and opportunity for technology and process optimization.
b. Develop design/architecture principles, roadmaps, models, plans, internal standards, and processes based on industry standard methodologies.
c. Provide detailed planning for assigned tasks, to include work breakdowns, timelines, and risk assessment.
d. Provide detailed documentation and diagrams for proposed, altered, and existing network security systems.

3. Network Fault Management – Including, EGP/IGP routing, Firewall, IDP, and VPN
a. Determines and initiates appropriate and immediate actions to restore normal services with minimal disruption
b. Investigates recurring and related operating system failures /inefficiencies by reviewing system logs, dumps and other information from clients or technical personnel
c. Establish the correct priority for reported network faults, document fully the systems involved, make any necessary changes and documentation
d. Performs or recommends proactive measures to prevent failures when possible
e. Works with staff in Information Security to supplement incident response and crisis management needs.
f. Shares responsibility for emergency system maintenance on a 24×7 basis
