About the College/Unit/Department

The Department of Financial Planning, Housing, and Consumer Economics has faculty at UGA Athens and UGA Griffin campuses and is one of the four academic units in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. It offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees with an enrollment of approximately 360 undergraduate and 120 graduate students. Undergraduate programs include Consumer Economics (with an optional emphasis in Applied Consumer Analytics), Consumer Journalism, Financial Planning, and Housing Management and Policy (with an optional emphasis in Residential Property Management). Our Griffin campus offers the Consumer Economics degree with an optional emphasis in Financial Planning. The Department is staffed by 20 faculty members with expertise in consumer decision making, consumer and family policy, financial literacy, financial planning, housing, and residential property management. Extension and public service faculty provide practical, research-based information to Georgia residents to improve quality of lives and communities. The department provides research and outreach in support of local government through the Housing and Demographics Research Center.

Position Summary

Assistant / Associate Professor in Financial Planning (nine months, academic appointment, tenure track or tenured, 50% research, 50% teaching).

Responsibilities: Develop a nationally recognized research agenda and secure external funding. Work with faculty to grow and/or sustain scholarly curricula in financial planning across all programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Teach primarily financial planning courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the Department of Financial Planning, Housing and Consumer Economics. Advise and mentor graduate students. Participate in departmental and collegiate governance and professional organizations.

The successful candidate must have a commitment to furthering the body of knowledge for the profession through research and publication in appropriate journals as well as excellence in undergraduate and graduate education.

Additional Requirements

All applicants must hold an earned doctorate (at time of appointment) in financial planning or a closely-related discipline (e.g., family economics, consumer economics, resource management, accounting).

Additionally to be considered for the position of Associate Professor, the applicant must also have at least four years of experience and an outstanding record of research productivity.

To be eligible for tenure on appointment, candidates must be appointed as an Associate Professor, have been tenured at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrably national reputation to the institution. Any request for tenure upon appointment must be approved before hire.

At least one degree in Family and Consumer Sciences is preferred.
