North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University through educational programs, publications and events. Cooperative Extension agents deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.

Agriculture plays an important role to the economy in Lincoln and Cleveland Counties, generating a combined $135 million in sales annually. There are a combined 1,826 farmers cultivating 60,910 acres of land. Primary field crops include corn (3,900 acres), soybeans (20,700 acres), wheat (11,200 acres) and cotton (1,700 acres).

Essential Job Duties

This position will serve row crop farmers in rural Lincoln and Cleveland Counties, located in the rolling foothills of southwestern North Carolina.

Other Work/Responsibilities

This Area Extension Agent position will be based in Lincoln County but will also be serving Cleveland County.

Responsibilities of this position will include the development of educational programs, local research/demonstrations/field days and response to specific requests for information and troubleshooting in all agronomic commodities and related agricultural issues facing the producers in Lincoln and Cleveland Counties. The position will also be responsible for pesticide education and pesticide certification programs.

Minimum Experience/Education

One of the following educational requirements: – A Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) in the job related field, – A Bachelor’s degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one of the degrees in the job related field, or – Completion of a Master’s degree with at least one of the degrees in the job related field. Also required: a personal automobile; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the County Extension Area Agent’s job requires that the individual possess habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, and a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual. The employee must be adept in both oral and written communication. The County Extension Area Agent is eligible to become a member of the non-tenure track/special faculty at North Carolina State University. The County Extension Area Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of county Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The County Extension Area Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and county leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.

Departmental Required Skills

A Bachelor’s degree in crop science, agronomy or closely related field is required.

The candidate must be able to network with diverse audiences, customers, volunteers, Extension Specialists, and local Extension staff. The candidate must be able to develop and implement innovative strategies for presenting education programs and provide leadership in planning, marketing, and evaluating educational programs and activities with measurable impacts.

Travel within the district is required. Occasional travel outside the district is required.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

A Master’s degree is preferred. It is the expectation that a Master’s degree will be pursued.

Previous Cooperative Extension and/or relevant experience is preferred.
