The Department of Clinical Sciences (DoCS) is a team of veterinary scientists, researchers, and teachers dedicated to excellence in educating and training veterinarians and comparative biomedical scientists, furthering health care and wellness through discovery and clinical research, providing outstanding and compassionate medical care to a diverse range of animal patients, effectively engaging the animal-owning public, government and industry partners, and providing leadership in integrating biomedical sciences to advance One Health. DoCS is committed to guiding the professional and graduate education of students preparing for veterinary and research careers in a broad range of specialties, including zoological and aquatic medicine.

The NC State University Center of Marine Sciences and Technology (CMAST) in Morehead City hosts a diverse and dynamic group of inter-disciplinary research, education and extension specialists focused on the coastal and marine environment. The mission of CMAST is to serve our citizens and others who value coastal natural resources by:

•conducting research in support of sustainable use of coastal resources
•improving the coordination of multi-disciplinary programs necessary to understand the complex coastal ecological land, water and atmospheric coupled systems;
•providing education and training opportunities for students in marine-related sciences;
•promoting the development of improved technology related to use of coastal resources and for coastal industries; and
•extending marine sciences academic and outreach programs to the citizens of North Carolina.

Essential Job Duties

This position will develop a research and extension program on emerging diseases and pathogens related to Food Security and Ocean Health, and serve as the Director of the NC State University Shellfish Disease and Pathology Program based at NC State’s Center for Marine Sciences and Technology (CMAST) in Morehead City, North Carolina. The Assistant Professor position will have a primary appointment in the College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Clinical Sciences, and will be expected to foster development of integrated programs within NCSU and to build strong community partnerships with other state, federal and private nonprofit organizations.

North Carolina has a rich history involving shellfish and continues to invest considerably in efforts to restore and maintain shellfish resources. In addition, shellfish aquaculture represents a growing industry in the state with great potential for development due to North Carolina’s expansive coastal resources. The applicant will be expected to work directly with and support the needs of stakeholders within the state, region, and nationally by establishing and heading the NC State University Shellfish Disease and Pathology Program. In addition to providing disease diagnostic services including health certification, the applicant is expected to strengthen research capacity in the field of shellfish disease and to provide leadership at the national and international level regarding shellfish health in commercial aquaculture, habitat restoration, and in response to environmental changes and perturbations.

The position will be expected to mentor graduate and undergraduate students in research with limited teaching responsibilities. This work will elevate our research reputation in aquatic food supply and food security based on expected state and national policy changes to increase domestic aquaculture production capacity. The position is expected to actively seek external funding through grants from state and national programs as well as contracts with trade associations and industry partnerships.

This position will require routine travel for meeting with industry stakeholders, consultation with colleagues at the NCSU Raleigh campus or other locations, and to conduct research. The successful applicant must independently be able to travel from location to location without reliance on others.

The position will work closely with the North Carolina Sea Grant Marine Aquaculture Specialist based at CMAST to establish and maintain a joint research and outreach program to address the needs of the state’s growing shellfish aquaculture industry. The position is expected to interact as appropriate with the following campus-related research stations: Marine Aquaculture Research Center, Pamlico Aquaculture Field Laboratory, and the Mountain Horticulture Crops Research and Extension Center. Additional interactions are expected with UNC-Wilmington marine aquaculture programs, UNC-Institute of Marine Sciences zoonotic marine pathogens programs, the NOAA Beaufort Laboratory, NC Division of Marine Fisheries Shellfish Sanitation and Recreational Water Quality Section, and other coastal marine laboratories.

Other Work/Responsibilities

The position should contribute to DoCS strategic themes of excellence in educating comparative biomedical scientists and veterinarians, furthering health care of a diverse range of animal species in varied settings through discovery and clinical research, engaging public, government and industry partners, and providing leadership in integrating biomedical sciences to advance One Health, inclusive of aquaculture and wild aquatic organisms, producers and consumers of aquatic organisms, and general public invested in aquatic environmental health.

The position is also expected to serve on department/college committees.

Minimum Education/Experience

• DVM or equivalent with board certification in the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP), or PhD with extensive shellfish disease diagnostic and research experience.

Departmental Required Skills

• Demonstrated competencies in oral and written communications as well as interpersonal skills.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

• Expertise and experience in shellfish disease diagnostics, including culture, microscopy, and molecular methods pathogen detection.
• ACVP certification.
• Experience with health certification of shellfish.
• Experience with shellfish mariculture procedures and operations
• An established record of publications and funding.
• Expertise and experience in laboratory and/or field research on technical issues related to shellfish health and disease.
• Demonstrated skills in public presentations, communications, and organizational teamwork and leadership.

Required License or Certification

A valid drivers license is required for travel. NC drivers license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
