Crop & Soil Sciences is a Department with diverse disciplines that encompass research, extension and teaching related to soil science and theory and the genetic improvement, production and utilization of agronomic and turf-grass crops. Research in basic and applied science and the engagement and technology transfer to public and private sector practitioners.

Essential Job Duties

The Crop and Soil Sciences Department at North Carolina State University is seeking to fill an Extension Assistant position. The incumbent will lead extension and research activities on resistant weed management, new herbicide technologies and general weed science training for industry stakeholders, growers, and extension personnel. Development of educational materials including field demonstration plots, training days, field days, fact sheets, educational videos, and presentations will be required. The incumbent will be required to work with faculty in related areas to develop appropriate educational materials that address the needs of growers.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Manage Fike Teaching Garden, establish training plots in the field, present information at extension training days and meetings.

Minimum Education/Experience
  • Master’s degree or B.S. degree with 3+ years of alternative or equivalent professional training and experience (weed science, agronomy, or closely related discipline with emphasis on weed management or resistance).
  • Experience coordinating applied educational training in weed science.
Departmental Required Skills
  • Ability to collaborate with scientists and peers.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • 2-5 years experience.
  • Experience in handling machinery including tractors, combines, planters, etc.
  • Ability to effectively teach students at undergraduate or graduate level.
  • Ability to supervise and coordinate schedules of temporary employees.
Required License or Certification
  • A valid drivers license is required for travel. NC drivers license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
  • A valid CDL license is required. A CDL is required within 6 months of hire and must be maintained.
  • NC Pesticide Applicator License or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
