Founded in 2003, the UNC/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering is a unique collaboration between North Carolina’s two flagship universities: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) and North Carolina State University (NC State). The nationally-ranked UNC Hospitals and School of Medicine at UNC-CH provide an excellent clinical environment for interactions and translation, College of Engineering at NC State, ranked one of the finest engineering and computer science schools in the world, offers state-of-the-art facilities for students and faculty engaged in vital areas of research and technology transfer.
In addition to the resources of the Joint Department; the Closed-Loop Engineering for Advanced Rehabilitation (CLEAR) core;, Human Movement Science Program at UNC-CH;, the Biomedical Research Imaging Center at UNC-CH;, the NSF ERC ASSIST Center at NC State;, and NC State College of Veterinary Medicine all provide excellent opportunities for Rehabilitation Engineering faculty to develop multidisciplinary and translational collaborations.

Essential Job Duties

The UNC/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) ( is seeking to fill a 9-month tenure-track position in Rehabilitation Engineering at the rank of Associate or Assistant Professor. The Rehabilitation Engineering track of our department involves basic research in human neuromechanics, development and assessment of advanced technologies to restore sensorimotor function in individuals with physical disabilities, and translation of novel technologies to clinics and end users. Our interests include, but are not limited to novel rehabilitation technologies and clinical application, neural engineering, multi-scale biomechanics, and human motor control and learning.
We encourage candidates conducting basic and applied research in the areas of: (1) innovative therapeutic or assistive technologies with the potential to transform rehabilitation practice from the clinic to the community, (2) human neuromechanics across multiple scales, (3) effects of sensation, perception, and cognition for human movement control, (4) novel neural technologies and their clinical applications. Outstanding candidates in other areas of Rehabilitation Engineering will also be considered. This position will serve as core faculty in Biomedical Engineering with participation in both undergraduate and graduate instruction expected. The position will be filled at the Assistant or Associate Professor, depending on credentials and qualifications.
The selected candidate will have a primary appointment at NC State University, with tenure home in the College of Engineering. Laboratory space will be allocated at NC State on Centennial Campus, where most of the engineering departments, including Biomedical Engineering, reside. The selected candidate will have full rights and privileges at both NC State and UNC-CH.

Other Work/Responsibilities

The candidate must have the ability to collaborate with basic researchers and/or clinical investigators. Candidates will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate student education, particularly in the areas of rehabilitation engineering, biomedical instrumentation, and neural engineering.

Minimum Education/Experience

Ph.D. in Biomedical or equivalent in closely related field.

Departmental Required Skills

•Successful candidates must have a strong commitment to academic and research excellence.
•Successful applicants will have already established a highly competitive independent research program, or will otherwise possess the clear potential to do so.
•The candidate must have an interest in translating novel technologies into clinical investigation, and have the ability to collaborate with other basic researchers or clinical investigators.
•Excellent verbal and writing skills are required

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

•Clinical experience working with patient populations is a plus.
•Evidence of resourcefulness in securing funding for research
•Candidates must have demonstrated the ability to lead collaborative multi-disciplinary initiatives and projects.
•Candidates should have a commitment to mentoring students.
•Candidates must have demonstrated outstanding ability as a communicator, including publishing and presenting research in national and international forums.
