Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):  

Master's Degree or (Juris Doctor's Degree) or foreign equivalent. A total of five years of full time work experience to include: three years of full time work experience conducting investigations of allegations of discrimination and sexual misconduct and working on compliance with Title IX regulatory requirements in a higher education environment.  Two years of full time experience supervising professional staff; supervising discrimination and harassment investigations.  Experience addressing issues of a confidential and sensitive nature and the ability to exercise discretion and good judgement to address such matters.  Solid working knowledge and ability to interpret and apply best practices to federal and state equal opportunity and nondiscrimination laws and regulations such as: Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, VAWA and the Clery Act. Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders and diverse audiences.  Ability to motivate, train, coordinate and supervise a team-based office staff. Proven ability to work independently and to meet multiple deadlines and sensitive timelines.  Ability to build trust and work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community partners; and to balance the multiple, varying interests of those diverse stakeholders. Ability to exercise good judgment and to manage sensitive information.  Ability to prepare and present detailed reports and assessments.  Current understanding of laws and regulations related to Title VI, VII, IX, VAWA, Clery Act and 129-B.  Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Experience writing reports.  Experience conducting presentations and speaking at public events.  Experience working in a  unionized environment.


Preferred Qualifications:

Juris Doctor’s Degree or foreign equivalent).  Experience in a higher education setting.  Additional years of full time work experience conducting investigations of allegations of discrimination and sexual misconduct.  Additional years of progressively responsible experience working on compliance with Title IX regulatory requirements in a higher education environment.  Additional years of full time experience addressing issues of a confidential and sensitive nature and the ability to exercise discretion and good judgement to address such matters.  Additional years of experience supervising professional staff.  Experience partnering with Labor Relations to conduct investigations.


Brief Description of Duties:

The Assistant Director for Investigations/Assistant Title IX Coordinator will have a broad scope of responsibility, which includes: 

  • Directly supervise all investigators and the Investigative Support Specialist. 
  • Serve as the Title IX Coordinator’s second in command in matters related to discrimination and sexual misconduct. 
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and compliance of policies and procedures related to OIDE’s complaint/investigation process, investigate complex and high level cases.
  • Oversees the receipt, investigation, and resolution of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation complaints by students, employees and others protected under state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Oversee the receipt, investigation and resolution of discrimination, harassment and retaliation complaints. Provide direct supervision to the OIDE Investigators and Investigative Support Specialist.
  • Represent OIDE as second in command in matters related to Title IX and discrimination investigations in the absence of the Sr. Director or as a designee of the Sr. Director.
  • Assist the Sr. Director in monitoring university’s policies and procedures to ensure compliance with SUNY, State and Federal laws and regulations; ensure that policies and procedures currently being utilized are compliant with SBU and SUNY policies and work with office of General Counsel on legal compliance issues.  Assist the Sr. Director in developing and implementing process and procedure related to Title VI, VII and Title IX.
  • Serve as Senior Investigator and conduct sexual harassment and discrimination based investigations.   
  • Assist the Sr. Director in preparing annual statistical reports for the campus community and related compliance reports to SBU leadership and external agencies.  Work with appropriate offices to submit aggregated date (i.e. SUNY Domestic Violence report, SBU Annual Security Report, 129-B Report, etc…). Assist in the development of reports regarding Title VI, VII, IX requirements, issues, trends and compliance programs.
  • Other duties as assigned appropriate  and in accordance with departmental mission.

Special Notes:

This is a Management Confidential position. This is a full time appointment.  FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
