Required Qualifications:

Master's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or closely related field.  Three (3) years of full-time experience conducting and evaluating experiments in the materials and/or geotechnical areas of Civil Engineering.  Experience designing and planning experiments.  Experience advising on the use of equipment and materials in laboratory settings.  Experience maintaining sophisticated mechanical and/or computational equipment in an Engineering laboratory.  Experience providing assistance in the development of recommendations for laboratory improvements.  Excellent hardware and software computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience assisting faculty in conducting laboratory activities.  Experience supervising a laboratory.

 

Brief Description of Duties:

The Instructional Support Specialist will supervise instructional laboratories in the Civil Engineering Program, as well as assist in teaching lab courses. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining equipment in the civil engineering laboratories, supporting courses, assisting faculty with their research projects, supporting senior student design projects such as concrete canoe designs and steel bridge activities, and assisting with other lab courses as needed. The selected candidate will:

Maintain the sophisticated and critical equipment in the CE laboratories. Make sure that all the equipment in the laboratories are in working condition. Develop recommendations for laboratory improvements especially for the lab courses for undergraduate students: CIV 340, 341 and 342.


Design and plan experiments and assist faculty in conducting laboratory activities.  Make sure that lab equipment works properly and that necessary materials and supplies are prepared in advance of lab class. Provide support to students during lab sessions.


Help students with their course projects. Teach students how to operate laboratory equipment for their projects. Operate laboratory equipment for students when necessary. Monitor students while they work with laboratory equipment for safety.


Assist faculty with their research projects, provide support for senior student design projects, and assist faculty or students in designing research devices.


Develop, implement and maintain safety standards, safety policies and controls for the laboratories.


Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and department mission.

Special Notes:

This is a full time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
