Develops and implements a system for identifying, investigating, reporting, and preventing the spread of nosocomial infections among patients of all ages and healthcare personnel. Reviews cultures and sensitivities reported by microbiology laboratory of patients and personnel to determine if infection is nosocomial in origin. Confers with staff nurses on all patient care units regularly to determine occurrence of nosocomial infections. Investigates infections, especially those occurring above established thresholds or in clusters. Initiates culture and sensitivity, and appropriate isolation precautions. Coordinates follow-up of accidental exposure incidents for medical staff and non-employees. Assists with in-service education related to infection prevention and control house-wide. Serves as a hospital liaison to public health department and assists with reporting of communicable conditions. Maintains accurate records of nosocomial infections in patients. Monitors proper use of germicides, cleaning products, antiseptics, and disinfectants throughout. Communicates infection control and employee health activities to the administration, medical staff, and performance improvement committee. Prepares statistics and other pertinent data and reports to the infection control committee. Submits targeted surveillance indicators for infection control committee approval, based on studies that identify areas for improved patient outcomes.   Stays abreast of changing infection control practices and presents plan for compliance in a timely manner. Presents analysis and recommendations for further review based on data collection findings. Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures. Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                         

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field

Certification and Licensing:

Certification in relevant specialty or field

Experience:

Minimum 5 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Knowledge of business and management principles
  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.
  • Ability to establish department goals, and objectives that support the strategic plan.
  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop and train others.
