The College of Fine Arts and Design is a center of excellence for the arts and design, as well as a center of innovation for improving and promoting arts education. Founded in 2001, the college combines the experience of Oklahoma's oldest public educational institution with groundbreaking thinking about the role of the arts on the 21st century. The College of Fine Arts and Design nurtures leadership qualities in students, thus expanding the scope and qualities of their career opportunities. The Department of Art is student focused with small classes and dedicated studios spaces that allow students secure access 24/7.  The Student Gallery, located in the art building, is a space supporting student exhibitions and class critiques. Position Overview

Teaches, advises and mentors students, evaluates student performance, and maintains department and student records in accordance with university policies. Adheres to the educational philosophy of the university. Works in a collaborative manner with colleagues and professional peers. Participates in university meetings that relate specifically to faculty. Serves on department, college, and university committees as requested. Prepares departmental reports as requested. Engages in teaching, service, and scholarly and/or creative activities as defined by the tenure and promotion policy in the UCO Employee and Faculty Handbook. Faculty are expected to support & facilitate the department/school/college academic and university missions, visions, & long-term goals. This is a full-time, tenure-track position.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions

The Department of Art invites applications for a Full-Time Tenure-Track, Assistant Professor position in Jewelry and Metalsmithing beginning August 2019.  This position includes academic, artistic, and service responsibilities in an art program offering a B.F.A. in Studio Art with emphases in ceramics, drawing, jewelry and metalsmithing, new media, painting, and sculpture, B.A.Ed. in Art Education, B.A. in Global Art and Visual Culture and B.A. Arts Administration.

 

The metals studio is fully equipped for teaching fabrication, casting, and forging.  Students have an array of steel anvils, stakes and hammers for metal forming techniques, individual jeweler’s benches, Durston combination rolling mill, wire mill and guillotine bench shears, Beverly Shears, Bonny Doon hydraulic press, Neycraft centrifugal casting machine, burnout kiln, and 3 Vcella enameling kilns available to them. 

 

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following:

 

· Teach a 12-hour load each semester, including undergraduate courses in jewelry for non-majors, beginning to advanced levels in jewelry and metalsmithing, and art foundation courses as needed

· Provide a comprehensive program of materials and techniques in fabrication, casting, and metal forming

· Incorporate the history of jewelry and metalsmithing into the curriculum

· Challenge students with art and design concepts, issues and theories in contemporary craft, art, and design

· Engage students in creative activities and scholarly research

· Develop curriculum for all levels in jewelry and metalsmithing

· Manage classroom facilities

· Maintain a rigorous and active creative and scholarly exhibition record at the local regional, national and/or international levels

· Participate in professional activities

· Actively participate in department, college, and university affairs

Qualifications/Experience Required

Teaching, research, departmental/school and university service is expected. An earned terminal degree awarded by a regionally accredited or internationally recognized institution in the field specified in the position announcement (exceptions require Academic Affairs approval).

 

**NOTE** If the terminal degree is not obtained and submitted by the time of employment, the position rank will change to TT-Instructor.

Qualifications/Experience Preferred

The successful candidate will be expected to provide evidence of the following:

 

· M.F.A. terminal degree in Jewelry and Metalsmithing or equivalent field

· Ability to teach undergraduate course work in jewelry for non-majors, beginning to advanced levels in jewelry and metalsmithing, and foundations courses as needed

· Active and rigorous professional exhibition record

· 2 years college level teaching experience beyond graduate school assistantships

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

· Extensive knowledge of traditional and non-traditional jewelry and metalsmithing techniques, materials and processes

· Provide leadership and stimulate growth in the jewelry and metalsmithing emphasis

· Knowledge of historical and contemporary art, craft, design issues and theories

· Engage students in creative activities and scholarly research

· Assist in recruitment and retention initiatives

· Collaborate and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students

Physical Demands

Repetitive movement of hands and fingers - typing and/or writing. Frequent standing, and/or sitting. Occasional walking, stooping, kneeling or crouching. Reach with hands and arms. Visually identify, observe and assess. Ability to communicate with supervisor/students/colleagues. Regular physical attendance required.
