Overview

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The Communication Specialist will be responsible for the following:

  • Plan, write and edit recruitment and admissions print marketing pieces.
  • Plan, write and edit electronic marketing pieces, including HTML emails and websites.
  • Plan and manage SDSU Admissions social media presence across multiple social media channels.
  • Advise and assign tasks to social media and web assistants as it relates to social media.
  • Coordinate the student electronic communication schedule and process for the SDSU campus when communicating with prospective, admitted, and current students via emails and SDSU WebPortal messages.
  • Coordinate specialized recruitment communication plans including Presidential Scholars, Merit Scholars, out-of-state, international, etc.
  • Use a customer relationship management (CRM) system to manage events and communication campaigns used to support Enrollment Services.
  • Use a content management system (CMS) to edit and review text and media on websites when needed.
  • Collaborate with academic colleges and departments to write and edit for communication campaigns as needed.
  • Represent Enrollment Services on campus-wide committees.
  • Create surveys and conduct market research to evaluate the effectiveness of existing marketing and communication plans.
  • Compile and analyze survey and market research results and make recommendations based on what the data reveals.
  • Support other Communications area staff as needed and serve as a back-up in responding to university management’s immediate communication requests.
  • Edit, finalize and distribute (either printed or electronically) admission notifications for all undergraduate admission groups.

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $3,691 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,515 - $6,173 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in communication, public relations, marketing, journalism, media studies, or related field. Minimum of two years of related professional, work experience. Knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and communication, and exposure to marketing and marketing research. Strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication channels.

Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills

  • Master’s degree or 3-5 years of professional, work experience in marketing, advertising, journalism, communications, public relations, or related field
  • Knowledge of San Diego State University’s organizational structure, policies and procedures
  • Experience with using a customer relations management (CRM) system
  • Experience with using a mass email system
  • Familiar with the Associated Press (AP) style guide
