The Markaz, whose name comes from the Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew, Turkish and Urdu word for "center," is unique in its cultural focus and goal of serving all students interested in Africa, the Middle East, and central, south and southeast Asia, as well as the American Muslim experience. The resource center serves as an entry point for students who want to get more information about opportunities to engage outside the classroom with the cultures, faiths and peoples of this vast region. Established in 2013, The Markaz is the youngest of seven centers collectively known as The Centers for Equity, Community, and Leadership, within the division of Student Affairs. The Centers consist of the Asian American Activities Center, Black Community Services Center, El Centro Chicano y Latino, Markaz Resource Center, Native American Cultural Center, Queer Student Resources Center, and the Women's Community Center.

The Markaz is in search of an exceptional leader and seasoned administrator to advance student learning and development through: Academic and Intellectual Engagement, Leadership Development, Mental Health & Well-Being, Community Building, and Alumni Engagement.

The Director is responsible for advancing the mission, coordinating and mentoring the professional and student staff, and administering the programs and daily activities of the Markaz Resource Center. S/he will oversee the ongoing development and growth of The Markaz, working closely with the Assistant Vice Provost of Student Affairs for Equity, Community, and Leadership (ECL), and colleagues within the ECL unit, the Dean of Students Office, the Office for Religious Life, The Markaz Advisory Board and the Office of Development with input from student staff and affiliated student organizations. S/he will collaborate with Stanford faculty and administrators to ensure that the needs of students and student groups connected to The Markaz are met.


  • Provide strategic direction for and manage The Markaz Center programs, including forecasting, planning and managing program budgets.
    • Lead strategic planning and assessment to identify the evolving needs and concerns of students; conceptualize programs and services, and allocate resources to address these needs and concerns
  • Manage the work of professional staff and other employees, processes and projects, to implement the strategic goals of The Markaz Center. Make hiring decisions, provide coaching and mentoring, and manage performance and staffing levels.
  • Identity, clarify, and resolve complex issues with university-wide scope and impact and substantial significance which may span multiple areas, using advanced technical and professional knowledge requiring broad discretion and judgment.
    • Crisis prevention and intervention: conduct counseling, intervention, and referral when necessary to assist students in resolving personal/academic problems and crises.
  • Develop, analyze, measure effectiveness and oversee programs and tools for delivery of student services or programs.
    • Develop long-term institutional and financial support for The Markaz working with Student Affairs and the Office of Development to connect with potential donors and raise funds.
    • Develop and implement a program assessment strategy.
  • Advise student groups affiliated with The Markaz and offer one-on-one counseling to students with personal and academic interests related to Muslim experiences and identities.
  • Manage the direction of internal administrative policy development for programs and operations. May serve as senior advisor to senior leadership on programmatic and policy development.
  • Interpret, implement and ensure compliance with university, academic and administrative policies with the program. Recommend new internal policies, guidelines and procedures. Direct process improvement for the center.
  • Lead university or school-wide initiatives and campaigns; develop long range planning and policy development for the center.
    • Actively participate in the ECL leadership team, including strategic planning efforts, cross-function efforts, and ongoing cross-center collaborations.
  • Represent department programs and initiatives at senior level meetings, conferences, and to both internal and external constituents. Serve on University committees.
  • Evaluate and recommend the technological needs and effectiveness for delivery of student programs and services.
  • Identify, manage relationships, and negotiate with external and internal partners, including: Counseling and Psychological Services, Graduate Life Office, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, Vice Provost for Graduate Education, Undergraduate Admissions, New Student Orientation, Dean of Students, Office of Religious Life, Office of Development, Diversity & First Generation Office.
  • Foster student-initiated programming and opportunities related to the center's mission to support students in their academic and extracurricular interests as well as mental health and wellness.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Master's degree in Student Affairs Administration or related discipline and higher education experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Extensive knowledge of the peoples and cultures of the Muslim world, as evidenced by academic expertise, public service, advocacy, and/or prior work experience; the ability to develop community and assist students in navigating within the university environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with and gain support from a broad and diverse array of constituents, including students, staff, faculty, alumni, parents, community members and visitors is essential.
  • Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.
  • Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information, develop and manage budgets and expenditures.
  • Fundraising and development experience preferred.
  • Strong leadership and strategic management skills.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and developing staff.
  • Understanding of underlying technological needs and requirements.
  • User knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

Evening and weekend hours, as needed, to support student programs, services and events.

Physical Requirements:
  • Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
