The Division of Health Sciences is the largest and most complex division within the University, employing more than 900 EHRA employees and 1,700 SHRA employees. The Division is composed of numerous Centers, Institutes, and agencies such as East Carolina Heart Institute and Eastern Area Health Education Center, the Colleges of Allied Health Sciences, Nursing, the Brody School of Medicine, the School of Dental Medicine, and the Laupus Health Science Library. In addition to the Academic and Administrative responsibilities of the division, the four professional schools provide clinical services throughout eastern North Carolina in a variety of settings and venues.

The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Innovation and Discovery, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Executive Director for Business and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences and Research.

Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.

Job Duties

The Prosthodontics Faculty in the School of Dental Medicine is responsible for teaching Prosthodontics to pre-doctoral students in the Division of Prosthodontics of the dental school.

This unit is within the Department of General Dentistry. The Prosthodontics Faculty reports directly to the Division Director of Prosthodontics.

The Prosthodontics division works in close cooperation with the Offices of Clinical Affairs and Dental Education and Informatics to support the School’s programs and initiatives.

In addition, the section works closely with other Schools and Colleges of East Carolina University and other components of the University of North Carolina, as well as local/regional educational and clinical programs.

The Prosthodontics Faculty supports the development and implementation of the Prosthodontic aspects of the preclinical and clinical curriculum taught to the dental students.

Specific duties include:

Helping ensure dental students are competent in the management of patients requiring prosthodontic care.

Coordinating and helping deliver curricular content related to prosthodontics in the simulation lab and didactic settings for the pre-doctoral students.

Working with the post-graduate AEGD and GPR programs to deliver curricular content and clinical coverage as assigned.

Working closely with the Division Director of Prosthodontics and the Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics in curriculum development and implementation related to Prosthodontics for the general dentist.

Working closely with the Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics and other informatics personnel to optimize the use of technology to support the section’s teaching programs.

Willingness and ability to cover pre-doctoral students in the clinical setting in procedures outside of the field of Prosthodontics as pertaining to the General Dentistry Model of the School of Dental Medicine.

Conducting basic and/or clinical research, and other scholarly activities that will help qualify for appropriate promotion.

Actively participating in the school’s faculty practice plan.

Preparing accreditation and other program documentation as needed.

Seeking to serve on committees and boards for state/federal government agencies, professional societies, and within the school.

Assisting the Chair of General Dentistry and the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in quality assurance and improvement, and compliance efforts.

Responding to assignments from the Chair of General Dentistry and the Dean of the School of Dental Medicine essential to section’s and school’s operations.

Attending meetings and representing the School in internal and external venues as requested by the Chair of General Dentistry or the Dean.

Representing the School to external constituencies as appropriate.

Performing other duties and assuming additional responsibilities as assigned by the Chair of General Dentistry or the Dean.

Minimum Education/Experience

DDS or DMD (or equivalent)

Eligibility for Certification by the American Board of Prosthodontics (or Board Certification)

Eligibility for dental licensure in North Carolina (A NC dental license must be secured within the first two months of employment.)
•Commitment to building teams in planning and to identify and resolve problems.
•Commitment to conducting basic and/or clinical research, and other scholarly activities that will help qualify for appropriate promotion.
•Commitment to the Mission and Vision of the School of Dental Medicine, including both a community-based and a generalist model of dental education.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Eligibility for dental licensure in North Carolina (A NC dental license must be secured within the first two months of employment.)

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Substantial clinical experience with implant supported prosthodontics.

Commitment to the implementation of a Digital Dentistry Curriculum

Commitment to evidence-based teaching and practice.

Experience in preparing and teaching preclinical and clinical aspects of prosthodontics.

Demonstrated record of collaboration within a general practice model of clinical education.
