The Department of English (http://www.ecu.edu/english/) is one of sixteen departments in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences at East Carolina University. It is a vibrant and research-active unit that offers three degrees: a B.A. in English; an M.A. in English with concentrations in eight different areas; and a Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Writing, and Professional Communication.

As an interdisciplinary undergraduate program, Gender Studies (http://www.ecu.edu/cs-cas/wost/) connects faculty across disciplinary boundaries around common interests in women, gender, and sexuality; scholars from across the humanities are well represented in the GENS community who participate regularly in Gender to a Tea, a series where faculty present their pre-publication gender-themed research.

East Carolina University (www.ecu.edu), a member of the 17-campus University of North Carolina System, is classified as a Doctoral/Research-Intensive University and enrolls around 29,000 students, with over 5,500 pursuing graduate and professional degrees. ECU is located in Greenville, NC (pop. 90,000), which lies 90 miles east of Raleigh and 80 miles from the Atlantic coast.

Job Duties

The Department of English invites applications for the Whichard Visiting Distinguished Professorship in the Humanities focused on gender and/or sexuality and multiethnic American literatures. This special one-year appointment starts August 12, 2019, and ends May 15, 2020. The faculty member appointed will be hired at the rank of Visiting Associate Professor or Visiting Professor.

The Whichard Distinguished Professor will teach one course per semester to include one English course in multicultural/ transnational literature and one English/Gender Studies cross-listed course in a selected topic. The appointee will guest lecture in other courses as appropriate.

The Whichard Distinguished Professor will also contribute through developing and participating in workshops, public lectures, and conversations relating to the humanities. The person appointed will act as an advocate for the importance of studying languages, literatures, and cultures and will engage not only with students and faculty in the Department, College, and University, but also with the East Carolina community at large.

Minimum Education/Experience

Applicants must have speaking fluency in English; a doctorate or equivalent degree in English, Gender or Women’s Studies, and/or another humanities-related field, such as Comparative Literature or Ethnic Studies; a distinguished record of publication; and a demonstrated commitment to the humanities.

Preference will be given to candidates with a history of university engagement and participation in academic programming and community building. Candidates selected for interviews should be prepared to discuss ideas for using additional resources associated with the professorship.
