East Carolina University (www.ecu.edu) is the premier research intensive institution serving the needs of higher education in eastern North Carolina. With an enrollment of over 29,000 students, ECU is a member of the 17-campus University of North Carolina System and is classified as a Doctoral/Research-Intensive University. The University is committed to addressing challenges faced by the coastal plain communities of North Carolina and around the world through the ECU Rural Prosperity Initiative; addressing water supply, management, and governance will be key components of those solutions. ECU is located in Greenville, NC (pop. 91,500), which lies ~80 miles east of Raleigh and a short distance from the Atlantic coast. The rapidly growing Department of Engineering (www.engineering.ecu.edu) currently has 31 faculty and over 550 majors pursuing BS and MS degrees in concentration areas that include Biomedical Engineering, Bioprocess Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The Department of Geography, Planning and Environment (https://geography.ecu.edu/) is a diverse, research-active, and collegial unit that houses four undergraduate degree programs, and offers the MS in Geography. The department is also home to the ECU Center for Geographic Information Science. Both departments have a strong commitment to inter-disciplinary research and participate in ECU’s cross-campus PhD programs, particularly our innovative Coastal Resources Management degree.

Job Duties

ECU invites applicants for two positions at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level within a growing cross-campus water resources cluster being led jointly by the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering and Technology. The cluster spans disciplines in the social and natural sciences as well as engineering. The new hires will be integral members of ECU’s emerging Water Resources Center, which is focused on providing resources and facilities to enhance transdisciplinary water research at the University.

Faculty in the cluster are expected to be highly research active, will serve as catalysts for new research projects, have the ability to participate in collaborative multi-partner research programs, and will therefore have a reduced teaching commitment. Applicants who can provide depth in their area of expertise while bridging across disciplines to create research synergies are highly desired. One of the new tenure-track positions being sought to grow the cluster this year will be in the Department of Geography, Planning and Environment and will have a research emphasis in water policy and governance. The second tenure-track position will be in the Department of Engineering and will have a focus on water engineering. In both cases, exceptional candidates from all relevant research areas will be considered.

Minimum Education/Experience

Successful applicants for the position in Water Engineering will have a PhD in Water Resources Engineering or a related field such as Environmental or Civil Engineering. Successful applicants for the position in Water Policy and Governance will have a PhD in Geography, or a related field such as Planning, Community Studies, or Public Policy. Qualifying degrees for either position must be from appropriately accredited institutions. All candidates must demonstrate an interest in interdisciplinary research and education.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

None

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Water Engineering: Individuals who can bring unique perspectives to solving water problems in coastal or urban hydrology, low-impact development, water treatment, and innovative uses of waste streams are encouraged to apply for this position. The candidate should demonstrate that their work can be integrated within the broader engineering context of human and natural systems. Industry experience and registration as a Professional Engineer are also desirable. Knowledge of continuous improvement processes and ABET accreditation requirements is beneficial.

Water Policy and Governance: The preferred candidate for this position will have expertise to investigate water policy, management, governance and planning from an intrinsically social science perspective. Applicants who can demonstrate novel approaches to working and interacting with the diverse actors that continuously recompose the hydrosocial landscape worldwide, including scientists and engineers, are encouraged to apply. Applicants should also communicate their interest and ability to apply these novel approaches to North Carolina policy, institutions, planning and politics.

For both positions, we value a range of prior experiences, including: discipline-based education research, participation in grant proposal preparation and obtaining external funding, and a record of scholarship.
