The Division of Health Sciences is the largest and most complex division within the University, employing more than 700 EPA employees and 1,700 SPA employees. The Division is composed of numerous Centers, Institutes, and agencies such as East Carolina Heart Institute and Eastern Area Health Education Center, the Colleges of Allied Health Sciences, Nursing, the Brody School of Medicine, the School of Dental Medicine, and the Laupus Health Science Library. In addition to the Academic and Administrative responsibilities of the division, the four professional schools provide clinical services throughout eastern North Carolina in a variety of settings and venues.

The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Innovation and Discovery, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Assistant Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Executive Director for Business and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences and Research.

Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.

Job Duties

The Oral-Maxillofacial Radiology (OMR) Unit Chief in the East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine is responsible for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral teaching in the OMR unit of the dental school. This unit is within the Division of Diagnostic Sciences in the Department of General Dentistry. The OMR unit works in close cooperation with the offices of Clinical Affairs, Extramural Clinical Practices, Business and Financial Affairs, Educational Support and Faculty Development, Dental Education and Informatics, Student Affairs, Research, Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD), General Practice Residency (GPR) and Pediatric Dental Residency and all academic departments to support the School of Dental Medicine’s mission, vision, programs and initiatives. In addition, the unit works closely with other Schools and Colleges of East Carolina University and other components of the University of North Carolina, as well as local/regional educational and clinical programs.

The Oral-Maxillofacial Radiology Unit Chief will work with the Division Director of Diagnostic Sciences and other faculty and staff in the OMR unit in delivering the didactic and clinical OMR curriculum.

Specific duties include the following:

Work closely with the Radiology Technologist/Imaging Specialist, OMR faculty, the Division Director of Diagnostic Sciences, and the Chair of General Dentistry in curriculum development and implementation as related to oral-maxillofacial radiology and the use of technology to support the division’s teaching program.

Coordinate all academic programs as relates to Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Unit in the school and at the community services learning centers.

Conduct basic and/or clinical research, and other scholarly activities to satisfy promotion guidelines.

Develop and deliver continuing education programs related to OMR.

Participate in an OMR imaging and reading service, including management of RISS (Radiology Information System and Services).

Maintain OMR facilities and maintain record keeping that fully comply with state and national standards.

Coordinate accreditation and other program documentation as needed.

Budget planning for the unit and ensuring that staffing, equipment, and funding are appropriate for the mission requirements as they relate to OMR.

Serve on committees and boards for state/federal government agencies, professional societies and within the school.

Conduct quality assurance and improvement, and compliance efforts.

•Assist the Radiology Technologist/Imaging Specialist and Clinical Informatics Specialists in the development and implementation of radiographic software.

Respond to assignments from the Division Director of Diagnostic Sciences, the Chair of General Dentistry, and the Dean of the School of Dentistry essential to unit’s and school’s operations.

Attend meetings and represent the School in internal and external venues as requested by the Division Director of Diagnostic Sciences, Chair of General Dentistry or the Dean.

Represent the School to external constituencies as appropriate.

Perform other duties and assuming additional responsibilities as assigned by the Division Director of Diagnostic Sciences, the Chair of General Dentistry, or the Dean.

Minimum Education/Experience

DDS or DMD (or equivalent) from an appropriately accredited institution with expertise in dental education.

Completion of a formal training program in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology from a CODA-accredited institution.

American or Canadian Board certification in OMR or eligible for the ABOMR Boards.

Eligibility for dental licensure in North Carolina.

Experience teaching pre-doctoral dental students in the area of Oral-Maxillofacial Radiology.

Commitment to the Mission and Vision of the School of Dental Medicine including both a community-based and generalist model of dental education.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Eligibility for dental licensure in North Carolina.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Experience as a course director for pre-doctoral radiology.

Demonstrated commitment to evidence-based teaching and practice.

Demonstrated commitment to conducting basic and/or clinical research, and other scholarly activities that will help qualify for appropriate promotion.

Demonstrated commitment to and evidence of building teams in planning and to identify and resolve problems.

Experience in community outreach activities.

Willingness to apply academic experiences of contemporary dental education and traditional educational values to the Community Services Learning Center model.

Experience with digital record keeping, imaging, and grading.
