Job Responsibilities
Reporting to Architectural Design Manager of Housing Project Management Services, incumbent acts as an Associate Architect assigned to new construction, renovations, modifications, and repairs of facilities that are under the management of Housing & Hospitality Services (H&HS).

Has day-to-day responsibility for the following activities: (1) identifying facility needs, developing project scope, schedule and resource options for approved projects, (2) managing and preparing the appropriate design and documentation for the assigned projects, (3) presenting design concepts to the user groups using appropriate CAD drawings, photos and other visual methods, (4) diligently initiating, coordinating and following through on all consultant activities to ensure design adequately reflects user groups' needs, and (5) supporting construction administration to ensure work is executed in a continuous, prompt manner within the project budget. Act as in-house technical consultant to all H&HS user groups with regards to design and construction.

This position requires strong administrative, writing, and negotiation skills sufficient to take full responsibility and accountability in managing assigned projects.

The variety of H&HS functional areas (user groups) includes On Campus Housing, University Apartments, Dining Services, Guest House, and the Lake Arrowhead Conference Center.

Job Qualifications

Possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited professional program in Architecture or related field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience. (Required)

Possess and maintain a current California Architect License. Minimum of seven years professional experience working in private practice, corporate and/or institutional settings, preferably with universities, colleges, or school systems. Architectural experience shall include multifamily residential, food service, and office projects, and Type I and Type V constructions. (Required)

Working knowledge of Green Building Design concepts and LEED rating systems. LEED AP credential preferred. (Required)

Proficient in AutoCAD (version 2005 or above), Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Acrobat Professional, PowerPoint, Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word and Project and other project management software. (Required)
Skill in preparing effective graphic presentations, such as, colored 2-D drawings, 3-D renderings, physical models, and finish material boards. (Required)

Working knowledge of construction industry standards, safety standards, accessibility requirements, building codes, and California Administrative Codes. Working knowledge and skill in interpreting construction specifications, technical drawings, construction methodology and construction scheduling techniques. (Required)

Working knowledge of all phases of architectural/construction practices and the formats of the contract documents. (Required)

Skill in preparation of construction documents including but not limited to: drawings, bidding requirements, general conditions, agreements, and technical specifications; and skill in preparing itemized cost estimates for assigned work. (Required)

Must possess and employ strong listening and interpersonal skills. Must be articulate and command diplomacy, tact and, when necessary, assertiveness. (Required)

Ability to communicate effectively through written reports and oral presentations. Must be able to speak on a one-to-one basis or in small group settings, using appropriate grammar and vocabulary to convey relevant information. (Required)

Ability to perform effectively with frequent interruptions, distractions and conditions and fluctuating workloads. (Required)

Ability to plan and to pace work, and when required, to isolate oneself from informal interruptions to ensure that immediate job responsibilities are performed, deadlines are met, and projects are not jeopardized. (Required)

Must possess and employ superior time management skills. (Required)

Ability to command a complex and continuously changing array of information and demonstrate sound judgment based on minimal information. (Required)

Ability to work independently and as part of a team, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with peers, department/University personnel and the public. (Required)

Ability to stand, climb, stoop, push, pull and crouch for an extended period of time and to lift items weighing up to 35 pounds as required when reviewing project assignments. (Required)

Experience in project planning and management involving critical path analysis and scheduling to coordinate and prioritize workloads. Ability to coordinate project elements by determining the time, place and sequences of actions to be taken on the basis of analytical data. (Required)

Must be very organized, proactive and able to identify, analyze and resolve problems. Must be able to recognize alternatives and their implications. (Required)

Ability to conduct on-site visual inspection of projects, involving walking, standing, climbing stairs and ladders, stooping, crouching, balancing (when inspecting precarious locations). Ability to work in various environmental conditions when conducting visual inspection of construction, such as: noise, fumes and dust. (Required)

Working knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (O.S.H.A.), construction and general safety rules, and equipment and clothing requirements when conducting on-site visual inspection of construction. (Required)

Ability and desire to convey a positive, professional, business-like appearance and attitude to all user groups, consultants, and colleagues. Interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively and tactfully with diverse departments/University personnel at various levels. (Required)

Ability to recognize simplifications or improvements in established procedures and work methods. (Required)

Must have and maintain a valid California Driver's License. (Required)

Working knowledge of University policies and procedures and ability to process documentation to accomplish various transactions. (Preferred)

Working knowledge of Building Information Modeling (BIM). (Preferred)
