Physics and Astronomy: Visiting Assistant Professor of Physics

Physics and Astronomy – Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, invites applications for a full-time, Visiting Assistant Professor of Physics beginning in August of the 2019-2020 academic year. Augustana College is a selective liberal arts college of approximately 2,500 students, including 29 percent first generation college students, 23 percent Pell Grant students, 21 percent students of color, and 9 percent international students.  Our 115-acre beautifully wooded and largely residential campus is located in Rock Island, Illinois, a diverse Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities metropolitan area along the Mississippi River with 400,000 residents about three hours west of Chicago and 45 minutes east of Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa.  Strengthening our diverse and inclusive community is central to the college’s mission and  strategic plan. We seek applicants with an interest in fostering rigorous, inclusive, and high-impact learning environments for a diverse student body.

The successful candidate will teach a broad range of undergraduate physics courses and labs during fall and spring semesters. Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching (or have background in) calculus-based courses designed for a studio-style learning environment, which will be taught in the innovative expansion to the Hanson Hall of Science opening in fall 2019. The projected teaching load is six courses per year. Though not required for this position, Augustana College and the Physics Department encourage faculty scholarship and will work with the individual who fills the position to help them maintain and grow their scholarly work. This is a one year appointment. A PhD in Physics or similar field is required at or near the time of appointment.
