Four-Year Institution

Since 1912, The College of St. Scholastica (CSS) has been preparing students for a life of purpose and meaningful work by emphasizing the Catholic Benedictine values upon which it was founded. The College serves an enrollment of over 4,000 students in undergraduate and graduate degree programs throughout six schools— nursing, arts & letters, business and technology, education, health sciences, and sciences. U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks CSS among the best colleges and universities in the region for academic excellence and Money Magazine has cited the College in the top third of all four-year colleges in the country based on graduation rates, educational quality, affordability, and alumni earnings. St. Scholastica is a vibrant, growing independent private college with its main campus overlooking Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota.

The Position

The Dean of the School of Nursing (SON) is a vital member of the senior academic leadership team providing vision and strategic direction for all nursing degree and certificate options, including the traditional on-campus undergraduate program, post-baccalaureate accelerated/hybrid program, online non-traditional (RN to BS) program, and doctor of nursing practice delivered on the main campus in Duluth and through its extended campus in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean works collaboratively with academic colleagues to ensure the quality of all academic offerings of the College. The Dean facilitates communication and initiatives across departments and fosters excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service while promoting a highly productive and collegial work environment. As a leader, the Dean is responsible for the strategic governance of the School—advancing School priorities to senior administrative officers; promoting the College and SON mission and goals; balancing and addressing the needs of all disciplines within the School; and serving as an active member of the Academic Council, as well as on other key committees and task groups. The Dean is responsible for the recruitment, mentoring, and ongoing development of academic chairs, faculty, and staff; manages a $6 million budget; and oversees the resources, facilities, equipment, and interprofessional initiatives that support a dynamic classroom, laboratory, research, and clinical experience serving over approximately 1,000 students annually. An entrepreneurial and collaborative approach is needed as building relationships with external community stakeholders, managing external funds, fostering alumni relations, supporting campus diversity efforts, and partnering with institutional colleagues on fundraising and grant writing initiatives are essential components of the Dean’s portfolio. Engagement in professional activities and associations at the regional, national, and/or global level is expected of the Dean who serves as the chief ambassador for one of the largest nursing degree programs in Minnesota. The Dean may also be involved in teaching and scholarship in line with her/his academic interests as time permits. Support of the College’s Catholic, Benedictine heritage and values, and the commitment to provide an excellent education to students in a rigorous yet supportive environment are essential to the success of the Dean of the School of Nursing. This is an 11-month faculty position; rank and salary commensurate with qualifications.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in nursing, education, or a related field appropriate to the duties of the position. Additional required qualifications include: a distinguished career in nursing practice, education, and/or research; demonstrated leadership, administrative, and supervisory experience; excellent communication skills; an unwavering commitment to diversity, inclusiveness, and collegiality; and a record of accomplishment in teaching, scholarship, and service to qualify for appointment at the rank of associate or full professor. Familiarity with on-ground, hybrid, and online teaching modalities; knowledge of program accreditation and faculty governance; active engagement in professional associations; experience with grant writing; and a vision for integrating new and emerging technology, including the use of social media, to achieve strategic instructional, marketing, and communication objectives will also be important considerations in the selection of the next Dean of the School of Nursing.
