The Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Support and Student Wellness provides leadership for a range of student support functions, and strategic direction for the development of a holistic approach to ensuring student health, personal development, and overall well-being, for a diverse student population. Specifically, the AVC oversees the Division of Student Affairs’ student support and wellness cluster--a comprehensive portfolio that includes the following departments/offices/functions as direct reports: the Habif Health and Wellness Center (including medical and pharmacy services; mental health counseling services, and wellness education and advocacy); the relationship and sexual violence prevention (RSVP) program; the WashU Cares program (Washington University’s behavioral intervention program). The Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Support and Wellness also works 1-1 with students to provide support to, and intervention with, students who may be experiencing a range of challenges with a particular focus on enhancing the support provided by student affairs programs and services to first-generation and under-resourced students. As part of the student support and wellness cluster, the AVC also works closely with Directors of Athletics and Recreation. The AVC serves on a variety of University committees and task forces, serves as a primary point person for the University’s response to students of concern, and plays a critical role in crisis management response for incidents involving students. As part of the Division of Student Affairs leadership team, the AVC also coordinates the Division’s internal professional development activities.

 

Requirements:

MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • A Master’s degree in Education, College Student Development, Counseling, Public Health, Social Work or a related degree is required.
  • Qualified candidates will have a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in student affairs or other related fields for which this position provides oversight and/or works with closely including: Health/Wellness, Recreation, Counseling, Public Health, Crisis or Behavioral Intervention, Student Conduct and Community Standards; Support programs for first-generation and/or under-resourced students.
  • Strong management and supervisory skills; ability to mentor and develop staff, and the ability to work collaboratively; budget management experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to manage multiple, competing priorities; strong analytical skills and excellent communication skills are required.
  • Possess the ability to respond to and manage student crises.
  • Highest standards of integrity and ethics in both performance and behavior; ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Strong commitment to, and understanding of, working with a diverse student population and as part of an inclusive campus environment.
  • Understanding of college student development and critical issues facing college students.

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Doctorate in Education, College Student Personnel, Counseling, or a terminal degree in a related field (e.g., MSW or a health-related profession; JD) is highly desirable.
  • Active participation in professional associations.
  • Experience working with high achieving diverse students.

 

CRITICAL SKILLS AND EXPERTISE:

  • Strong management and supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques and the ability to de-escalate emotionally distressed or agitated students or family members.
  • Student focused.
  • Active listening skills and empathy.
  • Highly organized and attention to detail.

  • Ability to collaborate across a wide variety of disciplines.
