Summary of Position:
Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Students, the Director of International Scholars and Global Learning, is responsible for leading in the support and engagement for international students and visiting faculty, students interested in participating in a study abroad/away experiences, and to assist in navigating the legal and administrative processes of immigration and other related policies. The Assistant Director will provide leadership in the Division of Student Life (DSL) and across the college with both faculty and staff in order to create strategies that assist Mills students and visiting faculty in being successful.
Essential Job Functions:
Study Abroad, Study Away, and Alternative BreaksAssist with the development and implementation of advising materials, student information sessions, study abroad fairs and faculty workshops.
Serve as the National Student Exchange (NSE) coordinator.
Serve as a contact for faculty interested in community engaged learning initiatives that include an international component.
Monitor and analyze changes in external regulations, legislation, and policies for impact on study abroad programs.
Conduct post-implementation analysis to determine the need for further enhancements, finer distinctions and/or additional process/policy components.
Responsible for overseeing academic-year, summer programs, study tours, and internships abroad in various regions across the world.
Advise applicants to the program; evaluate applications and personal essays.
Implement pre-departure orientation sessions for outbound students and co-curricular events for returning students.
Advise students about visa requirements and application procedures.
Implement and improve a returned student programming.
In collaboration with the Primary Designated School Official (PDSO) and Responsible Officer (RO), make site visits abroad to evaluate existing programs and develop new ones.
Work closely with faculty and staff on Mills directed programs including preparation of faculty proposals, budgets, and planning materials.
Serve as a member and provides administrative support for the Study Abroad Committee; provide strategic planning and academic review of all programs.
Proposes, leads and/or participates on policy and planning committees and working groups.
International Student and Visiting Faculty Support
Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) for F-1 Students and Assistant Responsible Officer (ARO) for J-1 students and visiting faculty.
Maintain student records in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
Advise international students on complex U.S. immigration regulations and procedures related to employment, travel, change of status and reporting.
Coordinate and plan programs thatwhich support the social and academic integration of F-1 students to enhance student retention.
Assist with orientation programming, open houses, outreach events, International Education Week planning and other events to support sense of belonging for international students and faculty.
Advise the International Student Alliance.
Provide advising and support for students with issues related to immigration status.
Administer the Mills DACA renewal support fund.
Provide referrals to off campus legal counsel to support immigration related concerns.
Stay up to date and admins the Dean of Students on state and federal policies and legal updates that may impact immigration.
Advising and Careers
Provide basic career & academic advising and support for students in a team role as part of Advising, Careers and Global Learning.
Provide event support in a team role as part of Advising, Careers and Global Learning.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Intersectionality in terms of all aspects of diversity including diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of College students.
Student affairs profession, particularly in a liberal arts college and/or womens college context.
Legal and compliance issues involving international students, international travel, and experiences away from campus.
Computer skills involving databases, spreadsheets, word processing, web based interactive communication, social media and/or other applications utilizing software applicable to the function.
Safety policies, practices, procedures and requirements of the department, College and Illness & Injury Prevention Plan.
Strong interpersonal, communication, presentation, listening, and cross-cultural communication skills.
Ability to advise individuals of diverse backgrounds with various levels of English proficiency.
Effective oral and written communication skills and public speaking capabilities.
Ability to take appropriate steps to promote and sustain effective working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment and understand the needs of a diverse population.
Ability to manage a budget, track student payments and make budgeting predictions.
Experience living, working, or studying abroad.
Experience serving as the Primary Designated School Official (PDSO).
Education and Training:
Bachelors degree required, Masters degree preferred.
U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident, as mandated by federal regulations for F-1 DSO/J-1 RO eligibility.
Passing a background check as required by federal regulations for F-1 DSO/J-1 RO eligibility.
Physical, Mental, and Environmental Demands:
Work requires week-end and evening availability.
At times, the incumbent will be sitting for long hours and using computers.
Hearing and speaking are required for communication.
Work requires flexibility in terms of time, and physical demands.
Work occasionally requires physical exertion such as lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds.
Interruptions and meeting with a variety of people will be required on a regular basis.
There are a number of deadlines and multiple requirements associated with this position, which may cause significant stress.

This is a full-time exempt position with an FTE of 1.0. Salary is commensurate with experience and includes an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance, 403(b) retirement plan with college-matching after 6 month qualifying period and 22 days of vacation per year, 12 sick days and 17 paid holidays (subject to annual review). Staff members also receive free admission to campus events, use of the pool, fitness center, and tennis courts. Tuition remission is also available after an introductory period. Voluntary benefits include: pet insurance, long-term care insurance, legal-assistance insurance, cellular provider discounts and computer hardware discounts.
